This place is called VogoNs, not VogoOs 😉.

Trash win Me, and install Win98 SE. Everything should work much better on that old computer (especially old DOS games, WinME is basically win98 with less compatibility towards old software, just to make you buy new software, and less stability (on purpose, too?)).

Pick the SDL 1.25 runtimes libraries for windows here : http://www.libsdl.org/download-1.2.php, and put it in your c:\windows\system folder (it will then be detected by any program that requires it), or in your ScummVM folder (it will only be availlable for scummVM). BTW, be sure to pick the latest Win32 daily build of ScummVM 😀.

The latest SDL library has a severe video tearing problem. I'm not sure what's causing it, but it's really, really bad. Every few cycles the SDL window "tears". It doesn't matter if it's ScummVM or DOSBox (starting with .56 for DOSBox, to give a rough estimate of when it started occurring, not sure about ScummVM).
I'm going to attach a video of it in my next post. =D

Yes, it’s my fault.

Okay, here's the video, as promised.
You'll need the TechSmith Lossless Video Codec to view it. (The uncompressed AVI is only 170Kb with this codec for God's sake!!)

Huh. I see we've gone off-topic again.

Colin, contact Ender to see if this is a known issue.

Die, slowly and painfully. You have no idea how hard it was as a kid with that name :)

Anyway, as for the SDL tearing issues, I have heard reports of TWO people having this problem. It seems to only occur with specific video cards/video card drivers. Eg, I have no problems on ANY of my machines (in Windows or Linux).. but my videocards are a Voodoo3, Savage4 and a Matrox G400.

As far as I know, it's caused by a driver bug, and won't be fixed in SDL itself. So all I can recommend is:

a) If you get tearing, upgrade your video driver if possible
b) Downgrade to SDL 1.24 (http://www.libsdl.org/release/SDL-1.2.4-win32.zip)

I know in both cases it was some kind of GeForce. It's possible your both using the same version of the driver. It's not actually that suprising. SDL is obviously running some commands, probably in the wrong order, that differ from what the video cards expecting. So the display becomes out of sync.

I'll ask around and see if anybody else is having this problem, or if anybodys found a fix. What drivers are you running?

The latest, 40.72. They're WHQL certified, but I still think they're EXTREMELY buggy. As a matter of fact, I *know* they are, because without deleting all the language-specific DLLs for the thing, its CPL crashes.

Well, there must be newer. I asked a ScummVM user who said he had that problem until he upgraded his drivers to 41.03, and then it went away. He's using a GeForce4, mind you, but I though driver version numbers were all the same for nVidia?

In any case, it's a driver bug, theres nothing anyone else can really do.

I'm sorry, I couldn't resist. I had a homeroom teacher in high school who liked James Brown, and every other day he'd play some concert recording at the end of homeroom which started with the regular James Brown hype/spiel. I still have it drilled into my head, over 8 years later... 😀

"The Hardest Working Man in Show Business..." Hey, these are not bad things to be called. 😀

Sorry about that. 😀 Besides, if your only problem as a kid was having a weird name, you're ahead of me. 😀

Yup. ftp://download.nvidia.com/Windows/41.03/41.03_win2kxp.exe

It does not appear to be beta?

Oh, I could list them all, starting with being born, then going on to living on the street at 14, and so on. But I won't :)

BTW, Vogons needs an IRC channel somewhere. Or if there is one there should be a link to it I can find. :)

Or me get a decent IM client. 😀

Of course, that's tricky when your online connection is stable but the computer you use changes. JavaAIM maybe.

But I like IRC better. And that's a good suggestion for down-the-road.
Hey Colin, irc.zetafleet.com? Use Mirc or something to access, but with an optional online Java client? 😀

Heh, always a possibility, but I'm having enough trouble setting up the server I'm preparing to move zetafleet to. (horray! and, uh, surprise!) We'll see later. 😀
