Hello all,
I have dragged and dropped my entire collection of DOS games to my hard drive, but as you know the folder/game names are longer than the 8.3 under DOS. I would rather not manually edit 2000+ entries by hand, so I thought I would ask you if there is a DOS utility that allows the display of these long folder names.

Thank you!

+1 for DOSLFN.

I recommend replacing the command line shell (4DOS is decent for this) and utilities such as MOVE and DELTREE with LFN capable ones if not using the DOS version that comes with Windows 9x operating systems.

If you want also LFN support for CD-ROM drives with the latest version of DOSLFN you need to get SHSUCDX (recent versions has improved in compatibility but it is still not perfect to fully replace MSCDEX yet). The older 0.34d version doesn't need SHSUCDX for this.

Thanks!

Then you're set!

Just go to this link and download DOSLFN.

OK, how do I use this? Should I leave everything in its folder., and run the .com file?

Many thanks!!!

Run the .COM file.

Since it is a TSR program, I suggest adding it into AUTOEXEC.BAT after MSCDEX or SHSUCDX.

Like this:

MSCDEX /D:CD0
C:\DOSLFN\DOSLFN.COM

Assuming that you downloaded the latest version and extracted the files into a folder called DOSLFN in the root of the C drive.

You can also load it into high memory if you have UMB available but one should be careful there due to ISA DMA usage when accessing floppy drives if you are using UMBPCI and may need LOWDMA.SYS loaded in CONFIG.SYS. With EMM386 or any other EMM as the UMB provier there is no such problem.
