So I have the GOG version of Tyrian 2000. I am trying to use it natively and not the built.in dosbox option from within Windows ME (I'll install 98SE when new HDD arrives). I launch the setup program but the various DMA options even complain they can't find a sound blaster compatible card or worse completely lock the system up. I believe DMA 0,1,3 are the options.

I have the default Win ME drivers installed for the sound card which is an ESS 1869. It shows in device manager as ESS 1869 Plug and Play Audio Drive WDM. It's installed on the only ISA slow of my Dell XPS t550 machine with the BX440 MOTHERBOARD, 512mb RAM, and Pentium III 550. This is a fresh OS install with no autoexec or config .sys changes by me. The card has the following resources showing in windows IRQ 7 (I reserved it in BIOS since I heard some older games prefer 7 to 5), the first DMA says 1 and the second says 3 IO 0240-024F 0388-038b 0300-0301

You will likely need to install VxD drivers for that ESS card (instead of WDM) to run Tyrian and other "compatibility challenged" DOS games.

I can at least confirm that the GOG version runs fine on a real DOS machine, since I'm using that on my Pentium MMX rig.

I tried changing to IRQ 5 and no go. Also, I get no music in Raptor but I get sound fx. So exactly the opposite. With a Dell crappy Sound Blaster Live installed everything in Raptor worked if I remember correctly and I had sound fx in Tyrian but still no music.

I was wondering the same. Where can I find none WDM versions.

Check the ESS section of Vogonsdrivers.

I can't recommend you a specific driver version since I don't have that particular card. Rule of thumb for ESS cards: WinME drivers are usually WDM, Win98 drivers can be either WDM or VxD, while Win95 drivers are always VxD.

Great news, installed VXD drivers from a post I found on here from 2013 and both games are working perfectly! I'll attach the zip in case anyone stumbles across this!
