Any ideas where to find some mystical driver extcd.sys ?

I am currently trying to get my dvd drive of dell inspiron 15 to work in dos but unfortunately without any success...
I have tried all dos cd drivers from archive org and others I could find.

I found on some topics, that some guys managed to get their dvd's running with driver extcd.sys but no luck yet for me to find them...

it's contained in the file you can download from this link https://www.dell.com/support/home/nl-be/drive … riverid=r123008

which, while the link on the page is outdated, the reference to the dell file is in the link, I found on this page http://www.z80.eu/freedoscd.html

That is very interesting. Thanks for the link - the extcd.sys really recognizes the drive, the letter appears, but unfortunately, when I try to open the CD, I get an error, that drive is not ready.

I tried to load the driver with a tool devloader.com, which let's you load the driver in command line. What I get is:
USB CD Detected
EXTCD001 Device installed
Sector size too large, drive(s) skipped.

When trying to acced the cd drive:
CDR103: CDROM not High Sierra r ISO-9660 format reading drive D

The CD is original win98se CD.

My dvd drive ir Optiarc DVD+/-RW AD-7585H
Any Ideas?

You can try Jack R. Ellis driver (XDVD2.sys) for your DVD drive: http://optimizr.dyndns.org/dos/drivers.html

Thank, that one I tried, but it does not fit to my drive:

Optiarc DVD+/-RW AD-7585H

Any ideas what else could fit?

Have you tried booting from the cd? How far does it get ?

There are MANY generations of Inspiron 15; can you be more specific on its model number?

That's a SATA internal drive for laptop.

Booting a SATA device with DOS can be problematic; you might want to take a look at this thread: Sata CD-ROM Driver for DOS 7.1?

SATA to IDE converter is clearly not an option for an internal drive on a laptop. 😟

It used to get until it tries to use the OAKCDROM driver and then it used to get an error message that no cd rom found.

BUT, that used to be the case because:

You could try changing the storage mode in the BIOS, from "AHCI" or "SATA" to "IDE" or "Legacy". Just to be sure.

Well that's it, thank you a lot!

I changed SATA mode from AHCI to ATA (those were the only two options) and that's it and then the OAKCDROM.SYS did it's job! Thanks a lot for the hints!

Just for the record:
That was Dell inspiron 15 N5010
