Hi there folks!
I've always been a fan to that game and some weeks ago I've felt like playing it.
Unfortunaly (sp?) it doesnt work on Windows XP so I dowloaded a program to make it work on xp and followed all the steps. (http://members.iinet.net.au/~rsd/U8inWindows.html)
It worked. But without sound/music
When I tryed to turn those on, the game woulnd't run. A black screen would appear and a high sound like a sqeerk would sound and nothing else happened then.
On that same web page there was a link to your program and it helped me. Now the game works. With music but not with the sound.
That same web page instructed me to ask for help here on your foruns if I had any problems and it also asked to post the VDM.log but there is no such file in my machine.

If it helps, this is the way I used VDM. I opened the prompt and made this:

C:\ULTIMA8\VDMSound>dosdrv
VDMSound DOS loader, version 2.01 (Aug 04 2001)
Copyright (C) 2000-2001 Vlad ROMASCANU.

VDMSound is covered by the GNU Public License (GPL), version 2 or later, as
published by the Free Software Foundation, Inc. (http://www.fsf.org/).

Loading 'VDDLoader.dll'...
Successfully loaded & initialized (hVDD = 0x01).

C:\ULTIMA8\VDMSound>cd..

C:\ULTIMA8>u8w

(u8w is the .exe that makes Ultima 8 work on windows)

Thanks
Bernardo

Hrmm. This looks messy. I noticed two things:
1) The warning that states: The patch will only work on the latest versions. Do you know what version of U8.EXE comes with your game?

2) That it appears that you're using a Win32 executable to start the modified version of the game.

If the second item is correct, I see no way for VDMSound to help, as it is written for DOS programs only. Perhaps someone else has had actual experience with this on an NT OS.

Well, in addition to all the remakes (http://reconstruction.voyd.net/ ), they run properly with DosBox (thus avoiding the tedious Mo'Slo nonsense).

For Ultima 1-3, I recommend emulating the C64 (Ultima 1 re-release, Ultima II), and the Amiga (Ultima III) versions.

Ultima 1 & 2 had limited distribution.

The Ultima re-release for the PC and the C64 were close to identical, except that the C64 had the Ultima music, while the PC version was still a PC-speaker affair.

Ultima II is a bit of a mess no matter which format. It's a toss-up between the C64 version and the Win32 port.

Did forget that Ultima III is something of a 3-way tie: The original Amiga version, the GameBoy version (home-made), and the Macintosh remake.
