This thing keeps freezing every time I try to access the internet or transfer data from other PC's of my local network, the network card is a "PCI C-NET CW54P wireless"

Motherboard: Aopen Ax59pro
CPU: AMD k6-II 350mhz
128mb sdram
Video: Ati rage II 4mb+ Creative Blaster Voodoo 2 8mb
Soundblaster Awe 64 Gold
HDD Western Digital 6,5gb
Windows 98 SE.

It seems to be something related to the network card compatability with the motherboard chipset, I have also installed a 3COM wired card and Windows hangs on the starup at the windows logo, can somebody give me a hand on this??

hi

i also have an MVP3 board which has exactly
the same symptoms when using a realtek 8139
based network card. the trouble appears to
be with either DMA or one of the many PCI
issues found with that chipset. Look at the thread
on here about using an MVP3 mainboard
where such things as the PCI latency timer
are mentioned with some tweaks you can try.

[Solved] Windows 98SE vs. DMA mode

in my own case i had a spare 10mb/s realtek 8029? network
adapter (BNC/RJ45 combo) which i tried and it
works great but that may be using port i/o
for all i know which may be why it works.

bye!

Thanks, I'll see if I can get another cards, I just bought an USB wireless G adapater and when I was at home ready to plug it I noticed It doesn't have W98 drivers, the damn thing only supports 7/Vista Xp/2000 🙁

hi

the simplest way to connect '98 to a wireless network
is with a wireless bridge.

I use a WRT54G and 2 WHR-G54S devices configured
in client bridge mode using the DD-WRT firmware with
one WRT54G as the wifi AP/router.

wifi bridges may also be known as gaming adapters or
similar. wifi in win98 was probably only viable using
orinoco or prism2 hardware which was 802.11b,
more up the date devices are going to be more hit
and miss.
