Are there US and EU (and other) regions of PC games? Aside from language changes in speech and text, I wouldn't have thought that PC games were altered for different countries.

Though come to think of it, I have heard of changes to violent games for Germany, I don't think they're allowed to show the swastika or Hitler in the Wolfesnstein games, and if I remember correctly they did have to change the pedestrians (who were already zombies in the British version) in Carmageddon to robots.

Do PC game developers have different region versions of sports games, with the teams' and the players names' different to match the local leagues?

Yes, specially in soccer gameS, for example FIFA and pro evolution soccer both have local teams for many countries, local leagues, and localized commentaries

I didn't know that, but it does make sense, thanks.

Anyway, on topic, Opposing Force is fantastic, my favourite of all the Half-Life games (I wish some of it's exclusive new enemies, human and alien, were in later games too, they are good enough to deserve to be in the sequels). My preferences for the HL games are:

Opposing Force > Half-Life > Half-Life 2 >> HL2: Episode 2 >> HL2: Episode 1 >>>> Blue-Shift

Blue-Shift is by far my least favourite, it's too short, adds nothing at all (no new weapons or enemies) and just feels like a forgettable fan-made mod. Speaking of mods, some of the HL mods are excellent, and my favourite is Azure Sheep, which is what Blue-Shift should have been. In both Blue-Shift and Azure Sheep, you play as Barney the security Guard, and in both games you start the day going through the same door (you are the security guard that you see at the door when, in the beginning of Half-Life, you (as Gordon Freeman) pass Barney as you ride in the tram on your way to work). But aside from that, Blue-Shift and Azure Sheep have nothing in common. Azure Sheep is very long, very inventive, full of great ideas, and is very well recommended. Blue-Shift is none of those things. Seriously, you must play Azure Sheep.

Other great mods for Half-Life include USS Dark Star, They Hunger, ETC (that's the name of a mod, 'ETC'), Case Closed, and a lot more that at the moment I can't remember. Google finds a good list at:
