Has anyone managed to get Interstate '76 working in Windows 2000/XP? It just doesn't seem to work. Period. 😒

Yes, it’s my fault.

Interstate '76
Interstate ´76 (Activision) No W2000 06/00
It crashes during the install....and brings the whole system down.

Interstate 76 (Activision) No WinXP 02/02
Received the follow messages:
1) Installs fine under compatibility mode, but at run time, crashes whenever you select anything from the menu (this is with and w/o d3d gold patch)
2) Interstate 76 nevertheless loads the main menue, remains with the start of a mission however suddenly hanging. The popular structure play Anno 1602 wanted not to be able to be installed because of to long file names. One must copy the contents on the fixed disk and take over from a Windows-9x-Installation the Registry entries, before one can settle the islands. Since these plays have already some years on the embossment, no more is not with Patches to count

Interstate ´76 Nitro Pack (Activision) No W2000 05/00
nitro.exe crashes just after loading.

Yeah, I saw the NT Compatible report, but thought there may still have been a way to do this. Guess not ... 🙁

I can install fine, but the game doesn't let me get past the startup menu. I might try with the new ACT and see if I can get it running. 😒

Oh, and "Windows 2000
The game is not compatible on this operating system."
How verbose and specific they are! (I've gotten old Activision games running on W2K before without any jerry-rigging at all, so I'm thinking their QA people are smoking crack.)

Yes, it’s my fault.

I read on some other forums someone claiming they made it work like this:

I used the gold ed. hardware patch found here, set every .exe in the 176 dir to run in Win95 compatibility mode, and it rocks.

The patch he mentioned is here:

http://www.3dgamers.com/dl/games/interstate76 … gpat16.exe.html

Also some folks mentioned this:

All I had to do was turn down sound acceleration in DXDiag and the game worked fine for me. Some missions wanted to randomly crash, but popping in and out of software mode and fiddling with the compatability options fixed it. I had a big thread on this some time ago.

Haven't tried these myself (don't have that game), but thought it was worth posting so that you guys could try.

i've got the game myself... and WinXP is the only OS i got installed, so i'm pretty curious.

OMFG, I got the game to run! I basically installed the gold version of the game from the Arsenal. I then installed the patch from 3D Gamers listed above. I set every EXE in the game's directory to Win95 compatibility mode. When I ran the game, it asked for disk 2, even though it was already in the drive. I put disk 2 in my OTHER cd-rom, and IT WORKED. I just spent an hour or so playing Melee, and had a BLAST. I hope this works for you. Good luck! Thanks for all the helpful posts too.

If it has a spaceship in it, I will play it.

I've been fortunate that the game has always ran fine under XP on my system, although I had to download and install the several patches I found on gamespot. No windows compatibilty toolkit options were needed.

But, I had to turn sound acceleration down to the lowest notch in dxdiag (as mentioned above) otherwise, I was getting the menu hang problem. Although now, I've just installed an Audigy 2 ZS card, and the game even works on the maximum sound acceleration level without hanging.

I've always played the game using "NORMAL" graphics mode at 1024x768, because I think the Direct 3D mode may be limited to 640x480, plus it had glitches when I tried it. Seems on a modern system the CPU has enough power to do the software rendering at a high frame rate on such an old game anyway. Had it running fine both with nvidia and ATI hardware.

Also, I think the game will only look for an inserted disk in the optical drive with the lowest letter (seems fine with daemon tools setup like this)

Now I've just started playing Nitro Pack, the graphics look even better in that one.

I got it to work WITHOUT compatiblity settings and without installing the patch. I simply reduced the soundcard hardware accelaration to zero and worked like a charm on my Voodoo2 SLI set up!
Titanium Trilogy wouldn't work though. It simply freezes when I click "play".
