It's the retail version, both expansions installed, the latest patch installed. When I launch the game, it goes to a black screen and stays there for about a minute until I have to close it via task manager. This is Windows XP 32-bit, but it does the same thing on a Windows 7 x64 workstation.

Just made a discovery. There are 12 .avi files in the Ghost Recon directory, and I found that two of them will not play properly in Windows Media Player. Both are in the directory:
<gameDir>\Mods\Mp0\Video

They are:
logoubi.avi
and
outro.avi

According to VLC, they use the "IV32" codec, when the rest use the "MP42" codec.

I tried deleting these two files. The game seemed to launch fine, though without playing the Ubisoft logo (and presumably will skip the ending FMV). I then re-encoded them in the H.264 codec using SUPER, and renaming them to the original filenames. Now the game plays the Ubisoft logo, and continues to work just fine.

Problem solved! I think.
