I got NFS SE for christmas by my parents. Problem is it won't run on Windows 98. When I run the installer I get an error message about INFSW.EXE wich I cannot switch to. After closing it I get two "illegal exception" messages about the same program.

It didn't find anything, but thanks anyway.
I suspect the problem could be caused by some of the add-on components RP9 or K-Ex 4.5, because Borland Resource Workshop 4.5 doesn't work either.

I remember having problems with Need for Speed SE on Windows 98 SE back in the old days. The only way I could make it work was to freshly install Windows 98 SE and not update DirectX. If I updated DirectX I was getting the same illegal exception as you.

I play NFS SE on my Virtual Machine (Host is XP Pro, Guest is Win98SE) without any issue. Software rendering is enough for this game + PCI64 sounblaster emulation.

Works like charm.

I don't remember if I got the same error messages or not, but the last time I tried to install NFS:SE under W98, I also had problems. The solution, as suggested by user "5u3" was to right-click on the Desktop, select Properties, then click on the Settings tab, click the Advanced button, then click the Performance tab and lower the Hardware Acceleration slider by 1-2 notches. After doing this, both the installer and the game worked for me.

If this works, remember to turn the acceleration back up when you're done playing.

I hope this helps.
