I have been plagued by this problem for too long. Ever since I tried to install both Civilization II expansion packs: Scenarios and
Fantasic Worlds. After it loads and comes to the first window, i get an illegal operation upon pressing the 'next' button. At first, I thought both games performed the same illegal operations, but as you can notice they are actually different.

Tried to contact the vendor Microprose, unfortunately, this company is defunct. Civilization II was one of few games that functioned under DOS and Windows 3.1. I was running it under Win98SE, however, Civilization II itself installed and is running fine on my computer.

Here are my system specs:

Motherboard chipset is Intel 82440BX/ZX
Processor is Pentium III@550 MHz
64 MB SDRAM (PC100)
nVIDIA Vanta w/8 MB SDRAM
Cirrus Logic CS4614/22/24 CrystalClear SoundFusion Audio Accelerator(a.ka. Crystal SoundFusion(tm) PCI Audio Accelerator).*
Windows 98 SE 4.10.2222 A
Could not obtain version of Civilization II Conflicts in Civilization:Scenarios & Civilization II: Fantastic Worlds.

*= sound card is onboard (i.e. integrated inside my motherboard)

Whew!...Took me a while to get all that technical jargon, hope all the above is enough. If If anyone has even the faintest idea as to how to remedy this plight, I would be grateful. Thank you.

I remember asking this at the time on my Windows 98 machine to a tech support representative. Basically what solved the problem was using CTRL+ALT+DEL and closing everything except for Explorer and the other program that makes Windows run (can't recall the name). You will get an illegal operation everytime if you don't do this.

After the installation you can play normally with no need to close any programs. Install this way, reboot and play.

Just finished trying the suggestions, and it worked like a charm!! hmm...I might of known to press CTRL+ALT+DEL myself, but I didn't know how many programs I had to close in order for windoze to still operate, surprising to find out only two: Explorer + Systray are needed.

Geez...So what the devil was the problem withit anyhow? Ahhh..who gives a squat as long as there's a solution. Small wonder that these exp. packs were rare, I guess I was lucky enough to get it since they apparently fell out of circulation pretty quickly. Which, in part, must have been due to this glitch. At least, now I can check one problem off my list of COUNTLESS computer problems!!!
