i managed to recuperate my old 3dfx voodoo2 card,
and have tried with my old PC:
ASROCK mainboard, AMD thunderbird 1GHz,
512 MB (one module, i think 166 MHz)

when i insert my old 3dfx voodoo2 videocard,
the PC starts freezing, regardless what i am doing at that moment
(for example even when only using notepad,
or even a few seconds after getting into windows)

dual boot: win9x and winXP SP2 (FAT32)
and in both does the same
(actually, i also keep a winME installation and switch that with win95 for very old games, and the problem also appears in winME)

the primary videocard:
- either geforce FX 5500
- or the onboard video (SIS i think)
tried with both, and the PC keeps freezing after a few minutes

also tried various settings in BIOS,
to no positive result

the PSU i think it's 350 watts

i should mention 2 important things:
- the PC doesn't freeze at all without the 3dfxv2 card in it (works fine)
- if i manage to start a 3dfx game (if the computer won't freeze until i can start a 3dfx game), the PC won't freeze while playing, and i can apparently play for hours

very strange behaviour

i think there's some compatibility problems between the 3dfxv2 and the rest of my hardware

i have another PC (sempron 3000, 1GHz memory, XP32 NTFS)
and i was thinking of trying to put the 3dfx card in this one too,
but i suppose if it won't work with the older,
can't work with the newer

many thanks for all your qualified advices

Have you tried the V2 in different slots?

Is the V2 getting overheated? I suppose it shouldn't with just a 1ghz cpu, but maybe worth checking.

May also be worth using a driver cleaner to get rid of the 3dfx drivers, and then start again. Though as you have the problem in 9x and XP, a driver issue seems unlikely.

I'd be careful about putting into a much faster system - if you do, then at least check it isnt getting too hot as there is a view that faster machines can overheat voodoo cards. I'll link the thread if I can find it.

Edit: here Voodoo2 vs modern motherboards

thanks all

- cannot use any PCI slot, as 3dfx cable to primary card's rather short

- tried using some custom 3dfx drivers, but they won't recognize my 3dfx v2

again, thanks

Can you test this V2 on the other PC?

Do you know glidewrappers ?
It can replace your voodoo card perfectly.

Fairy tales. Even nGlide is only 90% compatible.

Actually, part of the problem may be with the GeForce. Athlon boards with the Irongate (AMD 750) chipset were notorious for not working right with nVidia cards in the AGP slot. When you tried the onboard video, did you remove the GeForce card from the system and wipe the drivers? And speaking of onboard video, did you disable it in the BIOS and wipe the driver for that when using the GeForce with the Voodoo? Your system might be unstable from having three video cards and drivers installed at the same time.
