I've had that problem for as long as I remember, I think I always solved it by just opening the tutorial first. If you're going to play it it is VERY important that you keep save backups.

I never had a crash with Heretic 2 unless regarding the need of extension limit when using OpenGL.

Its easy fix just open exe in hexeditor and find
"GL_EXTENSIONS: %s"
replace
"GL_EXTENSIONS: no"
it works for all quake's engine games

Heretic II works fine for me, I just dug it up and installed it inspired by this thread. I installed to My Documents/Heretic2 to avoid UAC issues. It runs in OpenGL mode.

64-bit Windows 7, Geforce GTX 460, Core 2 Duo E8500, latest nvidia drivers.

I thought it was funny that it works 100% on my setup and not on older systems. There's even a profile for it in the Forceware control panel.

nhancer is not compatible with nvidia Forceware anymore.

How about just adding "-game quake2.dll" at the end of the target line of the shortcut?

that won't do anything. -game processes a directory for files to seek in. you can't even -game a dll file

Well, tested in XpSp3 and ME. 1.00 and 1.06. OpenGL and software.
The only tweak was - lowering the sound acceleration level.
Asus P4P800 SE/Pentium4 3.2E/2 Gb DDR400B,
Radeon HD3850 Agp (Sapphire), Catalyst 14.4 (XpProSp3).
Voodoo2 12 MB SLI, Win2k drivers 1.02.00 (XpProSp3).

Probably OpenGL dll is old wrong, but i dont know how fix it for this demo, for Hexen II i justed replated opengl32.. Heretic II demo has different dlls.

I have tried full game + 1.06 patch + 1.07 unofficial patch with Win7 x64 + Nvidia G970. Its working - only Video settings menu seems to be ignored, here i have see Software renderer, but regarding of MSI Afterburner game is running in OpenGL and looks like 3d acceleration is working.

For benchmarking purposes i still would like to see demo working too..
