I haven't had a chance to try it myself, but I stumbled across this in another forum:

There is no way to do a complete restoration without the iMuse system, but somebody has tried to make the Win95 version of TIE Fighter truer to the original. The Win7 compatibility guide may also be of interest in general.terms even if the TIE Fighter mod is not your cup of tea.

Note 1: The improved music quality makes it impossible to fit all of the game contents all onto one disc, so they music be split into two discs.

I think it is the quantity, rather than quality... redbook audio is a fixed format, after all.
