Hi all!

Hit a roadblock with my benchmarking project.

I can't get the 512 x 384 resolution going with GLQuake 0.97. I get the message "Specified video mode not available". I searched on google but couldn't find anything.

All other resolutions work.

So I'm wondering if someone got this resolution working or if it's simply not supported.

System is:

DFI Super Socket 7 with VIA chipset
128 MB Ram
Windows 98 SE
Fast Voodoo 2 Gold driver
Quake is version 1.9

No idea, sorry, but a Google Groups search report alot of other people with the same problem:
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!search/glqu … 20512$20x$20384

Suggestion from Groups (which reportedly fixes it):
glquake -width 512 -height 384 +_windowed_mouse 1 -window
or
glquake.exe -width 512 -height 384 -window

I always ran Quake in 640x480 and above.

-window did the trick 😀

Now a Voodoo 2 doesn't support window mode right? So maybe it's just a glitch. The FPS are identical. I will use -window for all resolutions just to be sure.

Great 😁 No, it doesn't support window mode in any resolution. It's probably just a glitch as you say.

Thanks heaps 😀

And fixed Forsaken to support 1024 x 768 when running Voodoo 2 SLI.

I followed notes from here:

http://fly.thruhere.net/fsplanet/help.htm

All you have to do is edit the .OPT file for the Voodoo 2 and double the entry for the frame buffer from 4096 to 8192 and then you can select 1024 x 768 in the menu.

So yea, I'm all set now with Forsaken, GLQuake, Quake 2 and Unreal. Might also add Incoming but it's a bit tricky to benchmark as it doesn't display a summary so you need to pay attention and / or record the video output and then read the final average fps before the next level loads 😊

This project will keep me busy. I'm lucky if I can do one CPU every 2 days 😵

If I recall correctly that game is a dream to benchmark as it dumps the whole summary results into a .txt file at the end so you can easily copy&paste the results.

Does it? The readme doesn't mention this and, so far, I couldn't find such a text file.

What directory to you think I should look for? I will try it before going to bed because it would be nice to have this one included 😀 Hopefully it supports all the resolutions as well.

Is there a patch maybe?

For Incoming, run "gameindex.exe", which will run a demo loop, and emit a
file called fps.txt in Incoming's directory when it's done. With Incoming, I
generally make a shortcut to the executable, and change the shortcut
definition to include the switches "-secondary -screenmode". The first will
force make it choose your Voodoo card (if you have a Direct3D capable 2D
card) and the second switch will give you a choice of resolutions to run in.

Interesting. There is no gameindex.exe in my installation.

To get the FPS data I run incoming.exe -gameindex

Do you have the GoG release? Or the original?

Both 😊

The GOG.com release is garbage. Hacked / modified to death and I can't try the installer as well because it doesn't run under W98. I just copied the game folder.

Original is what I use. It mentiones 1997 on the disc but no version or anything like that.

Could be an early or later release that you own where it's not included, or that there is some territorial differences between US, Europe and AUS releases.

The demo has gameindex.exe included. Available here:

Cool! Thanks for helping 😀

Just waiting for the -gameindex to finish and then I will look for a fps.txt or any file created recently. Then I will try the demo.

Also I noticed that the AverMedia struggles capturing the Voodoo 2 SLI at 800 x 600 and 512 x 386. However 1024 x 768 works without any issues.

No problem 😀

It is a common problem that it struggles with Voodoo 1&2 at those resolutions. You can capture 800x600 with no issues by using a VGA to DVI converter (I use Matrox DualHead2Go). Haven't tried 512x768 with the Voodoo's, but changing the hertz might help.

The demo, -gameindex in your release or the Voodoo 2 capturing?

Ha sorry 😊

The demo works for my benchmarking project. It comes with gameindex.exe

I added the parameters -secondary -screenmode and it benchmarks the first stage (the full version does ALL levels, but doesn't create a fps.txt) and leaves a fps.txt file. Perfect for what I'm going to do.

Also, resolution makes quite a difference. Voodoo 2 SLI at 1024 x 768 looks quite nice indeed.

Ok the demo results are a bit weird with the scores getting slightly faster as you increase resolution with SLI 🤣 But the differences are quite small.
