Most of these "tune-up" utilities end up doing more harm than good, when they do anything at all, in many cases literally becoming the very problems they're supposedly trying to fix.
It's a bit like those virus-infested web ads warning you about your computer having viruses and the imminent necessity for you to download and run their fabulous exe's.

You mispelled "all".
Software maintenance is not needed if you don't do stupid stuff in the first place. Even then, if you're the person who got the computer into a state which it needs "maintenance", you're not qualified to do it.

Do you realize a lot of people simply aren't qualified to run a computer and that's exactly why they resort to these insidious tune-up apps when they come to their senses and see that everything's gone to the dogs?
Software maintenance doesn't mean to install such garbage and somehow expect everything to magically go back to working like it did, it ultimately means to gain a sound understanding of how the OS and the applications interact with each other, the necessary tweaks, as well as being able to spot and correct a problem as it arises, not letting it snowball into thrashing, crashing, hang-ups and general sluggishness, which may, in certain situations, become even a security risk.
Regardless of what you do to keep your system running efficiently, if it comes down to it, do prefer the aid of applications that do one thing only, but do it correctly. Avoid "all in one" solutions like plague.
