UPDATE: Zeus fixed this! read below: Cross Racing Championship 2005 - DirectX9 Shader 2.0 bugs FIXED!

CRC2005 (http://www.crc-game.com/index.php) has issues with graphics using it's (best looking) DX2.0 (DX9) shader model renderer. These issues seem to go away if you're lucky enough to be able to select the DX1.4 (DX8) renderer (it also has a DX7 one but on my PC it says that's unavailable).

To install the game on modern systems (as it uses Starforce) you need some cracks, as it won't boot otherwise. Incidentally the Invictus LIVE! link (that comes with the game) is still live (as long as you set XP compatibility on it) and you can then update the game to 1.2.4, however you'll still need a crack (that works) to play it, I find.

So, why not just use the DX8 version? Well it's missing the cool "self shadowing" in-car effect (where, like Gran Turismo 6, you can see the shadow of the car interior across the dashboard as you turn/go into light). It's also missing some high-resolution texturing effects.

You can see some of the glitches here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=90hbVWVZBb8 - the long stretched polygons seem to be an issue with the rendering of the driver characters, because if you go into the game folder and remove the "humans.rpk" file, the drivers don't appear, and the warped polygons are gone. Unfortunately there's a second glitch, where you can see tree branches and foliage flying around the sky. This can't be stopped so easily.

I tried an alternative d3d9.dll file, but that made no difference. Looking at other reports, the bug occurs whether you use Nvidia or ATI modern graphics cards:

http://users.atw.hu/wenson/page.php?al=alias4 … 814563d0281a3de

I'm not sure there will be a fix for this one, any ideas? It's got to be something to do with the shaders they use in the game, or modern drivers, as on my old Pentium4 with Nvidia GeForce 7800GS+, there's no graphics glitches at all.

I'm not using compatibility mode on the exe. What's your graphs card/spec? I was going to blame the cracked files, but the same work fine on my old PC.

Yeah it's probably an Nvidia bug. Clearly shown here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f3kkhtkHuyc

I have not. I did email Invictus though, and they replied: "We are aware of the bug you experienced but we do not plan developing new parts for the game or releasing any patches."

Those bugs have been there since 2007... So 2 years old is too old to support?

Anyway, here's the fix:

crc.exe [crc32: C37CB19B]
FCA3Ah: 80 => 20

Zeus to the rescue! I'll have a look at this in a little bit...

Okay where do I find FCA3Ah? I'm using HxD to open crc.exe (the cracked one without Starforce protection) and the highest Offset is 0036B830... or am I reading this wrong?

YES! That works! To find the right line in HxD, set the column width from the default 16 to 10, then scroll down to 000FCA3A and change the first 00 column from 80 to 20 = glitches gone!

Zeus, do you know what was causing this?

It seems that's a legal download, in case any other mods are wondering.

Yep, it's even mentioned on the (unbeliveably-as-it-was-released-10-years-ago) CRC site: http://www.crc-game.com/

I just downloaded that (hopefully) legit full version of CRC2005 v1.2.4, and not only does it neither install nor use StarForce, it doesn't require an activation key, and its exe has a different value in the first 00 of FCA3Ah - 81 instead of 80. I'm also unable to replicate the bugs under Windows 10 Pro x64 with my DX12-compatible AMD Radeon R9 270. Either it truly is just an NVIDIA issue, or something about this full version of CRC2005 and/or Windows 10 has prevented the issue from surfacing.

I was asked today for a fix for freeware 1.2.4 (build 907) version, so I thought I'll leave this here.
The offset in this version is different and it's FD83Ah.

crc.exe [crc32: E61D7602]
FD83Ah: 80 => 20
