It's very nice that Zdoom and other ports are currectly fixed, optimized and get new features, or were compiled targetting older machines, I really appriciate this!

But my favorite ports DoomGL, GLHexen and GLHeretic that support the old 2.1beta of the Voodoo1 3dfx-OpenGL do not get in focus 🙁
I would love if someone could fix some issues that were never fixed since then. I played these ports since 1998 and they are nearly perfect for an old build like a pentium1/2 with a single voodoo1 card. They really look amazing on that hardware and perform really great!

Is there a chance, that these ports could get fixed?

These problems occur:
- Blood texture is flickerung
- Floor texture is corrupted on stairs when rotating the head
- gamepad-support is broken in GLHexen, DoomGL and GLHeretic is just fine.

I'll have to ask the author in order to get the sources, currently I only have the binaries:
http://rtk.mirrors.pdp-11.ru/_x86/alag3.mfa.k … /GAMES/GLGames/

This archive has also the old wolfgl files. these are not performing good on a p1/2 with a single voodoo1.
I down't know why and I get a lot of gfx-errors when using them. Perhaps someone could help here too.

Greetings
Doc

Well, you could just have posted a link to that FAQ. The source is here:

It's all about these. Using with p1-mmx, or P2 with Voodoo1 and 3dfx-openGL-Beta-2.1

Unfortunately there is no fast opengl-port for Wolf3D/Spear3D on a machine-type like p1/p2 with voodoo1 and 3dfx-beta 2.1 opengl.
These have graphical issus and performance issues on voodoo1.

There's Newwolf but that port used stolen bits from Q3's source (Which was not GPLed at the time!. Not the only source port to use unreleased Quake code *cough*Doom Legacy*Cough*)

The 0.9 versions of Jhexen, Jdoom and JHeretic should also fit the bill. And after playing those, you'll realize the so-called "prettiest DooM Engine" in its current state hasn't really evolved much from this point other than UI feature creep solving a non-problem.

These other ports require a far more powerfull machine. Newwolf e.g. is very slow and laggy on a p1/p2 with a single voodoo1.

I only have a newer doomsday-port...so I should checkout version 0.9...but it seems hard to find that jdoom build 0.9 🙁

I think the one you want is jdoom082.zip.
https://www.doomworld.com/3ddownloads/ports/
BTW have you tried the old gzdoom versions? I don't think they would be too slow.

Edit: now i've noticed that you were referring to DoomGL and not GLDoom, i linked to the GLDoom page.
DoomGL was made by the author of the old ZDoomGL which was very unstable and crashed a lot. Was DoomGL stable? I can't remember.

DoomGL was very stable and very fast on my old p1-200mmx. Now I use a PII-233 and it runs really smooth. Seems that it has nearly 60fps
but far better then the other/newer ports I have tested.

Yes for a PII with Voodoo1, I prefer DoomGL because of the smooth gameplay and if you want it "blocky" then turn off the bilinear filtering.
The only thing that drives me crazy is the flickering blood and the corrupted texture on the stairs if you move your head, but these two
things could also be a problem of the 3dfx-beta 2.1 opengl and must not be the fault of the author of doomgl.

you have to remind that normal doomgl means 320x200 and doomgl means 640x480 up to 1024x768. It's really good to be able to play
"hires-doom" on a single P1/Voodoo1 with DoomGl.

As I said before, fantastic for a retro-pc.

Okay, i've tried DoomGL and it doesn't work. Crashes complaining about lack of paletted textures support, i also tried it briefly many years ago. However glDoom looks more interesting, it works and as a i see it's based on Boom (was based on windoom originally) but some menus are not working. Seems like keyboard sometimes stops responding. Source is available.

Use the GLX-Launcher and deaktive pal-textures. They are activated in the batch-files and ini files,
so better start the glx-launcher, then it should work and it's really good.
