Sim City 2000 does not play MIDI music

Getting old Windows games working.

Sim City 2000 does not play MIDI music

Postby hwh » 2017-10-15 @ 11:25

Installed, runs, does not play any music. The music is already sparse; the game is kind of dull without music.

My first idea was it ran off CD audio and that wasn't available. So I imaged the disc. That did nothing. Interestingly this game selects the CD drive letter based on whatever it is installed from. Switched it in the registry, which got the movie to play, confirming CD access. But still no music.

The issue likely is playing MIDI files. They play fine in WMP. So I have no idea what the game is trying to do that isn't working. Help!

*slaps forehead*

I was beginning to experiment with alternative synthesizers and sound fonts when...

I found "SW Synth" in the volume turned all the way down. That was it!

So now my question is, why did I get volume in WMP... :blah:

Further data:

"On XP, you cannot stop Windows Media Player muting MIDI playback on exit. You need to open the Windows Mixer and unmute the MIDI slider each time."

Infuriatingly, this doesn't stop the file from playing correctly with WMP - just every other program.
