Star Trek: Starfleet Academy - GOG/Steam/CD-Version "DVD movie upgrade pack" (includes DVD Version "unofficial Windows 10 upgrade patch")
Release V1.0a - 17.06.2021
Compiled and tested by -KRRU-Dominus

The real work did gulikoza & dege (Thank you for your outstanding work!)
--------------------------

IF YOU DON´T OWN THE CD- or DVD-VERSION YOU HAVE TO BUY THE CD-VERSION FROM GOG (or STEAM) FIRST!
https://www.gog.com/game/star_trek_starfleet_academy

--------------------------

How to install:
- Download and install the K-Lite Codec Pack (Basic) from https://codecguide.com/download_kl.htm
- Install Starfleet Academy GOG, Steam or original CD-Version
- Copy the content of this zip-archive to your installation directory (overwrite all files)
- OPTIONAL: Download and install latest versions of dgVoodoo2 (http://dege.fw.hu/)
- OPTIONAL: Use dgVoodooCpl.exe to configure your graphics settings to your liking (resolution, antialiasing, anisotropic filtering); default settings (1920*1080) should work fine for most people
- Run sfad3d.exe (sfa.exe is NOT testet, but should work for software rendering)
- Enjoy the videos in 480p (DVD-Quality)

Known Issues:
- If you press "View Intro" you get message "Please insert CD1" - not really worth looking into it

Detailed information can be found in the included readme.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy - Chekov´s Lost Missions (Addon) --- Compatibility patch for Starfleet Academy (DVD-Edition)
Release V1.0a - 17.06.2021
Compiled and tested by -KRRU-Dominus

Part of the installation guide was heavily inspired by Ben Trube. Thanks for the groundwork!
https://bentrubewriter.com/2015/05/12/agfv-st … t-missions-gog/

--------------------------

Where do you get the addon?
It´s abandonware. Duckduckgo it.

It has never been released digitally (nor has the DVD-Edition), but the addon is available on ebay and other locations.
You will need to get your hands on one to install it or else this compatibility patch is useless.

Since I own the retail version of the DVD-Edition and the addon I have contacted GOG if they can/want to include/release it. We will see...

--------------------------

Background:
In 1998 Interplay released an addon to Starfleet Academy (Checkov´s Lost Missions aka CD6) that was originally simply cut from the game (hence "CD6").
Unfortunately it was not included in the 1998 DVD-release of Starfleet Academy and never got a DVD-Upgrade.
Even worse: Since the original DVD-Version of Starfleet Academy plays only MPEG2-videos using the obsolete MCI interface (and no "Interplay MVE" videos from the CD-Version), the game crashes when you try loading an addon-mission. So the addon was not useable with the DVD-Edition. The same is true if you have applied the unofficial Windows 10 upgrade patch for the DVD-Edition. So here this compatibility patch comes into play.

How to install? --- it´s a bit complicated but doable 😉

1) You have the GOG or original CD-Version (Steam release was not testet, but should also work)

- Install Starfleet Academy GOG or original CD-Version
- Download and install the Star Trek: Starfleet Academy - GOG/Steam/CD-Version "DVD movie upgrade pack" above
- Download and install the K-Lite Codec Pack (Basic) from https://codecguide.com/download_kl.htm
- Rename the installation folder and add .SFA
- Insert the Chekov´s Lost Missions (Addon) CD or ISO
- Copy the the “m” video folders from the movies sub-folder on the Addon disk to the movies sub-folder in your renamend installation folder. These should be m03, m04, m10, m11, m24, m25 and m27. DON´t copy g00.
- Copy the contents of the sounds sub-folder on the Chekov disk to your installation’s sounds sub-folder. Again this will be m03, m04, m10, m11, m24, m25 and m27.
- Install the Addon (run setup.exe in folder setup). If it won´t install rightclick -> Properties, then the Compatibility tab. Run in Windows 98 / Windows Me mode and Run as Administrator. The Addon will now be installed into the original installation folder but will overwrite nothing, since we did rename the folder before
- Rename the Addon folder to .ADDON, and rename the .SFA-installation folder back to the original folder name
- Rename data.dat in your installation folder to data.dat.old. Copy the data.dat from the Addon install folder (.ADDON) into your original install folder. Copy ONLY the data.dat file. Do not overwrite the EXE files or any other files.
- OPTIONAL: Delete the .ADDON folder
- Copy the contents of this patch into your movies folder in your installation directory and overwrite all files

2) You have Starfleet Academy DVD-Version:
- Install Starfleet Academy DVD-Version
- Download and install the Star Trek: Starfleet Academy - DVD Version --- "unofficial Windows 10 upgrade patch"
-----> Download: Star Trek: Starfleet Academy (DVD-Edition) - Windows 10 Upgrade Patch
- Copy the contents of this patch into your folder in your installation directory and overwrite all files

VERY IMPORTANT NOTICE:
There are two versions of the addon floating around AFAIK:
- One is dated 15.04.1998 and the data.dat has a file size of 48615 KB. This version is NOT working with the DVD-Version - it seems to be a german release.
- One is dated 20.03.1998 and the data.dat has a file size of 47699 KB. This is the one you want.

Detailed information can be found in the included readme.

Doesn't work. Failure initializing input devices. I'm using the original CD version. It was working before your patch, btw.

Edit: deleting dgvoodoo's dll files fixed the error message, but the videos are black even in software mode.
Now I've noticed that the original unpatched version also isn't working right in d3d mode, with or without dgvoodoo.

Edit 2: Finally tried this "upgrade" on the GOG version. It works, but the videos take AGES to load. Ironically they look worse than the CD version. The letterbox is not centered, the bars are gray instead of black, the image is less sharp and it just looks like a low-quality DVD, whereas the CD version has that proper old 256-color FMV look.

The GOG version comes with a custom ddraw.dll that enables anti-aliasing and anisotropy, so it looks pretty good without any tinkering.
Dgvoodoo works too, but the starfield leaves lines on screen above 640x480.

Save yourself the trouble, stick with GOG.

Interesting, I have the CD Version (German & English) as well as the DVD Version. All three version worked with the patch on my setup.
I tested the patch on an Win10/NVidia GPU Laptop & Win10/AMD GPU PC.

Edit: deleting dgvoodoo's dll files fixed the error message, but the videos are black even in software mode.

Did you mean unpatched, as no V1.15 installed (didn´t try that). Or did you mean, without my patch/dgvoodoo. Have you tried the latest version of dgvoodoo?

Well, you clearly did not read my HOW TO / Readme which is included in the patch:
Configuration:

dxmci:
%WINDIR%\system32\rundll32.exe .\dxmci.dll,configure (from cmd.exe; launch from installation folder)
- VMR9 Renderer: works, but long video loading times

Leave "Use VMR9" and "Force Mpeg2Dec" unchecked!

That should fix your problems - but no guarantees here, since there are dozens of things that can go wrong.

Your problems with the DVD Version videos may be fixed too, if you configure your K-Lite and dxmci properly. They are no real 480p SD-DVD-Quality, but way better than the CD Version (objectively, not subjectively 😉, but feel free to stick to the videos from the CD version. Small hint: In the foreseeable future, there will be an HD Upgrade pack available, that will need the DVD-Version/Patch.

Dgvoodoo works too, but the starfield leaves lines on screen above 640x480.

You should be able to fix the starfields if you switch to "ATI Radeon 8500" emulation, at least that worked for me.

Save yourself the trouble, stick with GOG.

Thanks for demeaning my hours of work, much apprechiated.
