I have installed this update and it works great, however it is only compatible with the English language. In fact, the start menu is no longer in Italian. Is there a way to restore the Italian language? This problem was solved by Unofficial Win98 SE Service Pack 2.1c v3, however this unofficial update caused me problems so I had to delete it and restore windows.
Is there a way, after installing the USB drivers of this package, to restore the Italian language in the start menu?

You are generally going to have a better time using the English version with those unofficial patches, as most of them are made with only that in mind, with only some being available for other languages, like Italian or German

Listen, by any chance can you find the file to install microsoft layer for unicode for windows 98? My IBM machine does not have internet access and therefore cannot automatically download the file. I need the one that can be installed manually.

You want to install KernelEx, don't you? Welp, here you go:
There are also further updates to KernelEx. You can find them on https://retrosystemsrevival.blogspot.com/
To keep top performance and compatibility, leave it disabled by default, enabling it only for specific programs.

Try this: https://cloakedthargoid.wordpress.com/nusb-wi … 8-language-fix/
Although it's not exactly the same problem you mention, and I did not test it specifically on Italian.

I downloaded it, but I have no idea how to install it. When I start the program, it asks me to specify the folder where to extract the files. Which one do I select, windows? system32? I do not know! 🤣

EDIT:
Ok solved!

In my case it was enough to restore the files: EXPLORER.EXE and QFECHECK.EXE
Everything works smoothly.

Thanks for sharing! I will add this information to the write-up.

Your Windows is now back in Italian, but USB mass storage generic drivers work too, right? 😀

There once existed a native Italian version of Nusb 3.1:

(This very old version may cause system instabilities)

Don't use it, it's bugged. When I used it I had kernel crash after a new device was detected.

The english version works like a charme but indeed turns windows 98 in english (not everything just a good part).

So here you will have to help me, basically I found out that the "system properties" are in English, like "Add new hardware".
So I tried to restore the three files, recommended in the article.
I looked for them in the installation CD, but I don't know why I didn't find them, maybe they are hidden under another name. So I got them from a clean windows installation.
I put them in C and from the MSDOS, since I can't log in in safe mode with the virtual machine, I copied them one by one in the destination folder, replacing the English ones.
When I started windows, I found that the "system properties" such as "Add new hardware" were still in English. I went to check and the files were those in Italian. (checking the language of the file properties)
With research I found that the USB installer not only replaced the files located in WINDOWS \ SYSTEM, but created another identical file in WINDOWS \ OPTIONS \ CABS. So I replaced those too, but the result doesn't change.
Also by replacing the three files, the removable disk is seen and is usable, but the icon for safe removal, which appears near the clock, no longer appears. Restoring the three files SYSTRAY.EXE, USER.EXE and USER32.DLL the icon appears.
If you reset EXPLORER.EXE and QFECHECK.EXE, the start menu returns in Italian, but "system properties" such as "Add new hardware" remain in English. Also the safe remove icon works.
Now it's up to understand what are the exact files that he changes, where are the texts of "system properties" such as "Add new hardware".

So I did some testing. The Italian version works very well, it doesn't give me any problems, I installed two removable disks and it installed them. 100% working. I also disconnected them with safe removal and here too, no problem!
Now it's time to understand if it works on a real machine. BUT I think so. I'll try!

Instead of running NUSB36.EXE, it is possible to open it in 7-zip to view the archive contents. This will show you all the files it changes, and you could analyze them one by one until you found which one is responsible for what. However, it sounds like you got it working with the 3.1 Italian package, so this remains mostly a theoretical exercise. Enjoy your newly working USB mass storage drivers! 😁
