I do all my vintage gaming on my primary PC via DOSBOX. I currently have an MT32 1st gen hooked up via an Emu 1x1 Midi tab USB adapter for all the classic Sierra titles I play.

1. Would a sound canvas 55 or 88 work with this setup?
2. Which one would pair best with the mt32? Are there any compromises to game compatibility/fidelity with the SC55 vs the SC88?

thanks in advance!

1. yes that works fine (I have the same setup with a SC55, MT32, CM64), you just have to use another midi cable and connect that to the pass-thru port of the mt32 and the midi-in of the SC55.
The only problem is that you need to connect the audio-out of the sc55 to the audio-in of the PC as well and most soundcards can only serve one device and not both the mt32 and the sc55. In my case I'm using a cheap mechanical audio switch to which both devices connect and is hooked up to the PC's audio-in.

2. no idea 😉

thanks for the feedback. I have a mixer, so I think I can handle the audio outputs.

Prices on used SC55s and SC88s are pretty close, can't make up my mind!!

I'd get the SC-55 of course. It's "the" General MIDI device for DOS 😀

Then from there you can explore other devices if you are that much into it, but a SC-55 should keep anyone pretty happy.

SC-88 is the vastly superior unit, plus take into account that it has a very accurate SC-55 map 😀

If you don’t want an extra switch for the audio, you can use the audio in and out on the SC-55. I am doing that with mine it works well. I found out how here;
