Hi, does anyone have tried put a midi file in a Virtual PC, running old OS, and try to play it, but it sounds like a weird sound. Does anyone knows how to fix that sound?

Also, why is the MIDI soundfont in the old OS, sounds different?

Not using VirtualPC helps. It has the worst OPL3 emulator ever

Does it provide OPL3 emulation at all ?
Early versions of Connetix VPC started out with SB Pro support (dual OPL2 ?), so perhaps they modded it later on for OPL3's stereo mode
(in terms of addressing left/right channel) but haven't otherwise updated the OPL emulation itself (essencially still stuck with OPL2 registers/no 4-OP mode).
I'm just curious, since OPL2 games like SkyRoads don't sound all that bad in VPC.. ^^

Try put any MIDI files in the VPC, it does play the MIDI, but it is quite bit distorted.

Use 86Box, it has a more accurate OPL3 emulation.
VirtualBox does not provide OPL3 emulation because it's not in their "priority" list.

How do you install 86Box? I cannot install, because it needs d3dx9_43.dll.

Hmm.. Try to install the latest DirectX 9 runtime (web installer), it's still beeing updated I think.

.. or look for the D3DX9_29_dll_update / D3DX9_30_dll_update package.

Canyon.mid was included with Windows 3.1. You can probably find it for download in a million places with Google.
