S3 ViRGE was anything but performance, is what leileilol is saying.

Also Terminal Velocity S3D looks about as ugly as Hellbender in D3D mode...

People give the Virge a hard time. Yes, the 3d sucks, but the 2d part is pretty good.

Even so the fact that 3d Virge is not performant in 3D means squat. None of the HW that we have are any good. A 386 is awful and useless. I mean who would get a 386@12Mhz when you could have gotten one at 16Mhz. Same argument with the Virge.

The point is we are in a antique/retro collection business. We collect and use things because it is fun not because it is the optimal card to use for the task at hand. At least that is how I view things. I think the Virge is actually pretty interesting to collect as an actual graphics card then stretch its capabilities. But then, I also think playing Quake on a 486DX2@66 is fun, so I could just be weird 😀

The thing is......Virge was never good in the first place. It's not about cinematic framerates but slideshow framerates and the only games it is best with are the ones that are packed in (usually Derby / Descent 2). This isn't about the old "i expect it all smooth!" perception from younguns that get the wrong idea about bygone computer eras. It's about a corpse of a Voodoo slaughter 🤣

S3 ViRGE, i actually have one that, and its marketting claim vs its real performace that make doubting the whole 'graphics hardware accelerator thing', until 3DFx Voodoo proves me wrong.

Awesome read even on fifth attempt.

People often forget how cheap the cards were. Virge was fair deal, I doubt it was fault of S3 that developers insisted on resolutions Virge could not handle fast enough.

Incidentally, someone can tell whether the pcem virge emulation (probably d3d) is performing normally in the latter part of this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CymoKAu33vo. The first part shows the reference software renderer. My guess is the virge emulation is not succeeding.
