VMWARE v3.1.1 Build 1790/VPC v5.0 Build 350

Both PC's using 16GB Expanding images.
Both tested under Windows XP Professional
Both tested with 256mb RAM
No additions on either OS but Video drivers from Vmware additions installed on Vmware
Host is Windows 2000 Advanced Server SP3
Both guest images located on same host partition.
Both guest OS's installed cleanly.
CD benchmarks were taken by using Daemon Tools on the host to emulate a WinXP Pro Corp CD.
CD was captured under the guest

Well, that depends on who you ask. Some say "most 2D games" work, others have said anything with Direct-X choked. Last I heard it was projected for future revisions because Direct-X has become so obligatory for Windows that they're concerned common applications will start breaking (due to no proper Direct-X support) because of it.

Update: Apparently there's _some_ kind of Direct-X support, but I can't find anything official. The FAQ below seems closest to an answer. They don't inspire confidence:

Q: Why do buttons and icons appear as black squares in Windows NT or Windows 2000 after running a virtual machine in Direct Draw? A: Going to full screen in a virtual machine that is configured to use Direct Draw graphics may cause buttons and icons to appear as black squares in Windows NT or Windows 2000. Rebooting is required to return the appearance of the buttons and icons to normal.

Q: Do you support Direct Draw/DirectX graphics?
A: VMware provides very limited support for Direct Draw through the HEL (Hardware Emulation Layer) in Direct Draw. Many Direct Draw applications will not run in a virtual machine.

Microsoft Windows 95, Windows 98 and Windows NT's Direct Draw can emulate DirectX/Direct Draw support for device that does not support Direct Draw (such as VMware's virtual SVGA adapter). This is done in the HEL (Hardware Emulation Layer) within Direct Draw. This emulation may be slow and/or unreliable.

Q: Such-and-such application produces terrible sounds or no sound at all, or aborts or behaves in other weird ways when trying to use the sound device.
A: Don't use that application, or use it with sound turned off if possible.

Maybe DosFreak can shed some light on this.
