according to this:

You might be able to replace the drive with an MFM drive (not IDE). But the drive CHS settings are hard coded in the BIOS. You could possibly use a higher capacity drive than the one that was installed but you will be unable to access the full capacity of the drive.

If you are squeamish, don't prod the beach rubble.

I'm sure there are tons of companies that developed an usb interface for the schneider PC. The return for this investment is promising, after all people have been using it for over 20 years now and almost every household just desperately waits for an USB upgrade...
Sarcasm aside, no there isn't a way to hook up an USB device (still can't believe you asked for this).

Gravy would be:
adding ATAPI support
extending XTIDE to 16 bit
extending XTIDE to PCI!

If you're feeing lucky, it even lets you emulate a hard drive using an XP box or a Raspberry Pi.

This project is bases on the ISA bus. What about using the External HDD connector on an old PC/XT? Would it work if i made a cable and connected it to an IDE to CF adaptor?
I guess not, the BIOS would probably not detect any harddrive...

I just use an XT-IDE variant on the ISA slot, and I seriously don't think it can get any better than that.
No, not a single IDE drive will work on that connector.

True. Still, if there's a parallel port, he could use a ZIP drive or a vintage CF card reader and put the drivers on a bootable 720k floppy. But I should stop talking now, don't want to make you guys angry. 😉
Just one thing: MFM/ST506 hardware emulators do indeed exist. Highly expensive, but they exists.
They're similar like those floppy emulators. In difference, they are no toys.
