I am still not having a lot of luck with this connecting larger drives to my 486. I have tried two more a 4.2gb and an 8gb both are detected at the correct size in the bios but fdisk will only lets me make one 500mb partition.

I have tried the ontrack software but it says I don’t have a Quantum drive for both. I then tried the first Maxtor 1.2 but that just gave me an error. Should I keep trying other disk managers? The two I picked looked like they would work with most drives. My controller card has some cache memory on it does that matter at all?

I use Ontrack Disk Manager 6.10 on my 386SX-40 with 6.2 Gb Quantum HDD, works pretty well. I'll give you a link for it if you need one once I get home from work.

I just found an old 1gb quantum fireball hdd in a dumped pc. I want to add it to my 486. Ontracks disk manger seems to format the drive ok but it gives me an error on bootup:

Dynamic Drive Overlay V9.57

Drive 1 Configuration Summary
BOOT DRIVE
Drive Number = 80
Model Number = QUANTUM FIREBALL1280A
Setting Dynamic Mode = 63 *OK*
Multiple Block Size = 8 *FAILED*
Press any key to continue...)

Anyone have any suggestions what I can do?
