I bough a full pack GUS Max v2.1 with all papers, box, and everything a few days ago for something like 5$, as well as AWE64 gold with all cables and stuff...

And I cant seem to get GUS to work in Windows 2000, and also in DOS.
Windows does not detect it, Dos says the card is busy when it tests it.
I have set the IRQ to 11 and DMA to 1.

I have the original disc.

Plug out everything else before connecting GUS 😀 Otherwise, check in this forum whats the default fail-safe setting for GUS and use that. Also make sure your PSU has some juice at -5V branch which is required by some ISA cards (not sure bout GUS).

Ok, i had one NEC USB 2.0 card in it, im gonna take that out.
The -5 Rail provides 0.3A.

I dont know where to start searching for that, thats why i opened this topic, i guess some one could point me to the usual problems right away.

I doubt you'll ever get the GUS working in Windows 2000 - I personally wouldn't bother. There was a beta driver released for the CS4231 codec believe, but the GF1 (the bit which does all the sample loading/playback goodness) wasn't supported beyond 95/98.

Try *all* the combinations of IRQ and DMA - the GUS can be quite picky; you may have to disable serial and parallel ports in the BIOS to make it happy!

Ok, ive set the HEX to 220
and CD IRQ to 10, DMA to 1, etc etc.

The GUS is detected now and the program gives it a PASS on every test, but still NO SOUND!
Windows doesnt even detect it (says unknown hardware on IRQ11), plus after driver install i had to restore win.com...

Any one?

[Edit]
The MIDI is detected, says Single Devices UltraSound midi output port.
But there is nothing detected on Device manager nor on Sound options for playback and recording.

Seriously, I can't ever see it working. The best/latest driver released was a beta directsound compatible version - like I said, it didn't support the GF1, only the CS4231 chip.

Stick with Dos, or Win95/98 if you want to utilise it properly.

Lol, it works under windows 95 MS DOS.

That means it has something to do with Windows 98 or something... Im gonna test OPL3 too, maybe my windows 98 is defected.

[Edit]

Derp, seems it was the serial ports. Works on Win98 too now.
Striving midi is amazing!
The volume is a bit ear busting, but i can handle it.

I did reccomend disabling the extra ports 😉

Try therain.mid - you may also want to get hold of the larger 'Pro Patches Lite' sample set - it's a good improvement on the basic samples included on the Gravis install floppies.

I have the CD only, 100+ MB of stuff on it. Where should i search?

Also, when it comes to memory, can GUS handle a 1MB module as 512? Thats all i have (from a S3 GPU).
