I'm currently attempting to help the MESS emulator's PC emulation. However, I need testcases. Anybody know of any games or demos using weird VGA features (or unsupported, either way, if it doesn't work, and uses the standard VGA, please post it here.)?

Duke3D does not use ModeX, it uses the VESA BIOS Extension for 320x400 and higher modes.

I remember VGA Interludes (a demo of which is included with Invasion of the Mutant Space Bats of Doom) did some weird things that didn't even work very well on some of the real hardware I once had.

Quake supports plenty of ModeX, with lots of 320 and 360 width variations (not just 320x240/320x400/360x480). Unsurprising since the 'inventor' of ModeX worked on it (Abrash)

Some early console emulators like Nesticle and Zsnes have 256 width video modes.

I also think there's this promotional platformer game that did some trick to make water blend.
