Hi, i recently started to build a dos machine
from scratch to play my favorite childhood games
because the emulation just wasnt doing it for me
anymore and got everything else running
nicely in the dos 6.22 os, but for some
reason none of my pnp isa cards (2x vibras, 2x awe 64's)
doesnt work (even with drivers installed correctly and the
soundcards detected by dos) i just recently
bought a sound blaster 16 ct2910 card which
seems to work fine in raptor,wolf3d,keen4 & stargunner
to name a few but for example couple
epic megagames like omf2097 and jazz jackrabbit
(which are very high on my list to play) has this
awful low quality and crackly music and sound
which im sure the sb16 card could do a lot better job...
oh yeah and soon i have also the ct1600 which was
quite expensive but it shows my passion to get the thing
to work so any help would be greatly appreciated! 😀

Hello there!

I made this YT video tutorial a while ago, showing step-by-step instructions to install Sound Blaster PnP cards:

Also what PC do you have. If it's fast (200 MHz+), disable L1 and L2 cache in the BIOS and try those games again.

yes i originally did exactly you showed in that video but after i installed drivers and ran the test program the ports 220 i guess 330 appears to not start and the program freezes... i currently have a 166mhz mmx processor hooked up.

Some things you can check:

PnP BIOS options
Any other ISA / PCI cards in the machine?
Disable things you don't need in BIOS (integrated devices like Serial and Parallel ports)

there is a trident pci video card.
if you mean disabling something that might conflict with the sound cards?

i have gone through that couple times and checked and confirmed in the ctcm that there shouldnt be anything causing conflicts.

What happens if you do this.

Boot the machine, press F5 (so not files are processed).

Then try running

CTCM.EXE
DIAGNOSE.EXE
AWEUTIL

Manually.

well no luck with the pnp ones
but how about the non pnp one i have
which is the sound blaster 16 2910 that has jumpers
and works well enough with about 80% of games i currently have
but for some reason gives bad quality output for some?

also where could i download individual dos 6.22 files
such as the keyboard files which for some reason are not
included in my install disks?

Reason why the pnp cards didnt work on my motherboard
was the bios because i got to try another motherboard with different version bios and it worked right away... Just saying
