Hi all,

My first post , need help with spec for quite a specific retro build.

Firstly, some background, I have a small collection of various old IBM XT's, sad I know, but those old CGA EGA games don't play the same on anything else. So I need to build an intermediate machine to write floppies and transfer stuff from my home network/internet via rs232/parallel. So I have an area to setup 2 machines, an XT and the intermediate next to it. As I had a spare empty XT case I thought, great idea, lets fill it with a more modern pc, it'll look great, those old pc towers were so big and ugly.

Anyway after many hours of research the initial idea morphed into making a 98/XP glide rig, I miss Quake! Nothing AT form factor shaped would really run quake 3 or XP well, so I've redesigned the XT chassis so I can fit a modern ATX motherboard. The question is what ATX board/cpu will best suit my requirements.

My Requirements:-

Dual boot 98se(for its dosness, the XT's, games) & XP (connectivity?)
Voodoo 5 5500 PCI (I have)
I really want to use a 60Gb SATA SSD I have spare, win98 is so fast & its small.
Need parallel, serial, ps/2 keyb/mouse.
CD/DVD writer, 5 1/4" & 3 1/2" Floppy, USB (ideally USB2.0)
Network.
DOS games/sound compatibilty.
Full size ATX (so the Voodoo PCI misses the drive bays)
Say 1GB RAM?

Options:-

PIII socket 370 with ISA SoundBlaster, PCI USB2 + PCI SATA
P4 socket 478 with USB2, PCI SATA & PCI SoundBlaster
P4 socket 775 with USB2 & SATA + PCI SoundBlaster
Core socket 775 (Like Asrock 4CoreDual-SATA2 R2.0) + PCI SoundBlaster

I will need to get a PCI SATA card if required, I have tried an IDE to SATA adapter and it crashes/corrupts XP on various boards, maybe faulty.

How fast can/do I need to go? Want to play all quakes, UT, DOS glide games, maybe even older DOS games, Doom, Jazzy, Duke3D etc.

Any help, recommendations of specifc motherboards greatly appreciated.

For DOS compatibility absolutely your PIII/ISA option. Also, this should answer some of your questions too. As for motherboards, really anything without bulging caps. ASUS stuff was top notch.

Can't you extent the options to KT133A too? I'd bet that a mobile barton on an Abit KT7a would perform better then the PIII alternative. It doesnt have the 512MB RAM limitation of tualatin boards and features an ISA slot. I'd also bet that its a better alternative than finding a BX-PIII board with some power adapters for a decent PIII CPU. It can host a total of 3GB RAM (even it the manual says otherwise), and can overclock (or downclock) the CPU on the fly from within Windows 98 or XP. What more can you wish for? 😉

So for DOS gaming compatibilty I just need 1 ISA slot presumably for a sound card. AWE64 Gold best?

Can I go too fast CPU wise? I have searched and found this P4 board:-

Currently I don't think to use AMD, but back in the day I was running an Athlon. I'll research what fast AMD boards have ISA.

There's no "best", if I could only use one card I'd go for a not noisy OPL3 SB16 like the CT2910.
If I'd go for style, a AWE32 up to the CT3980.
AWE64 Gold only has its noise/sound ratio for itself.
Plus, that's because I want sound blaster. If I were more open, terratec would be a way to go I guess.

If you're going with the PIII and ISA option I would highly recommend the ASUS P3B-F

- Supports pin modded Tualatins, Coppermines and all Slot 1 processors.
- Stable at 133mhz
- Jumperfree, all settings are done in the BIOS
I think it is the best 440BX board out there.
