you'll need slot-insertion drive as opposed to tray, for vertical placing.
i must warn you though, whenever disc-jam happens, it would have more devastating effect on slot drive.

There are vertical-capable tray-loading drives, they have little lugs around the edge of the tray to hold the disk while the tray goes in or out.
There is also caddy-loading drives, which work fine vertically as well.

No you don't. The vast majority (perhaps even all?) of the regular tray loaders work just fine vertically... I can't remember ever seeing one without the little retention tabs in the tray.
