What kind of NIC? Always found that Intel NICs were better in that era.
If it's Realtek, then there is actually an up to date 98/ME driver http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloads … 3&GetDown=false

Could there be a duplex mismatch?

To remove software from the equation, try a bootable Linux CD-ROM. If it's not already capable of connecting to network shares, you can use the command-line "smbclient" to connect to your Windows 7 machine and see if transfers are any faster.

The next step would be to, say, try running an FTP server (a nice simple one is smallftpd) on your Windows 7 computer, and then see if FTP transfers in Windows 98 run any faster.

Any how i think your right windows 98 is just lame for networking... it's not a deal-breaker just a little annoying when I'm trying to dump all the iso is on the drive...

When i had windows 2000 runing on it for a short time it would work at full speed so its just windows 98...
I may setup the FTP server just so I can access my games without having to move them to the Windows 98 PC

Oh. Well, if it was the same system, then I guess that answers that question.

FTP would inherently require you to move your games to your Windows 98 PC before you could run them. If you want to run them without moving them, you're stuck with Windows Networking – but you don't necessarily need high speed for that.

well i mean i wont have to go to my windows 10 computer and push them to the Windows 98 computer... then walk back to the 98 computer.. there not in the same room...
unless any one knows how to get the Windows 98 PC to access the network..

Yea I've used it with many machines and even did some benchmarks. But I forgot the exact figures I got. It was usable for small stuff, but copying CD images was painful.

However, you don't need to copy them. You can just mount it over the network, and that actually works quite well.

But yea, that's why I always have drive bays for easy removal. I shut it down, put it into a USB dock, copy everything I need over and I'm done in no time.

that's another thing i cant get my Windows 98 system to open the shared drives on my home server... i can see all the computers on the network but when i click on them it gives me an error when i get home ill get a screen cap of it..

Win7 and above is more secure then Win9x (No surprise there) so need to modify the base security level

https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/w … itpronetworking

Also as you have found out early Windows networking is stupid. You may have more luck simply typing \\ <IP Address> in the address bar to access the other PC.

Finally, I was surprised how many Win9x games worked absolutely fine in Win2k, so much its now my primary OS for 9x gaming, so maybe just go back to that?

So did you make the registry change or not? Simply seeing them only proves they are on the network, or to be more specific can find the browser master list of your network, not that you can actually access them. I can see my Router, TV, and other devices in my network, doesn't mean I can connect to them. The fact that you cant even connect via IP confirms its a permission/security issue rather then networking. (I am assuming you can at least ping each PC from the other)

That's cool, your PC your choice, just suggested it as you seem to be struggling with 98 and 2k is a legitimate alternative for 9x games (Even over XP) that not everyone realises

I'd recommend transferring files via something simple like ftp or WebDAV. Tools even exist for Win98 to mount ftp paths as volumes.
