How do you install and run Windows 1.0 on any virtual machine?

Just as you would install it on a normal machine. Install MS-DOS (a compatible version that's required) first, then install Windows 1.0 using the installation floppies of Windows 1.0 after booting into said MS-DOS that's installed on the hard disk.

Some tips for installing Windows 1 (from a well known source):
Installation notes:

  • The installer expects you to run it from the A: drive. Either write the images to disks or SUBST from a hard drive folder.
  • Windows 1.x will run on DOS 5 and later as long as SETVER is loaded and there is a SETVER entry for "WIN100.BIN" to report "3.34". Otherwise it will crash at startup.
  • COMMAND.COM will only run in a window in DOS 3.3 and earlier.
  • 1.x does not support PS/2 mice (unless you install v1.04 for the IBM PS/2). However if you overwrite MOUSE.DRV with the Windows 2.03 version, and install Windows with the serial mouse option, then they will work.

What Virtual Machines does Windows 1.0 work on?

You could try PCem emulating perhaps a Turbo XT running at 8 MHz or a slow 286 running at either 6 Mhz or 8 MHz with 1 MB RAM for the latter.

What about Virtual Box Does Windows 1.0 work on Virtual Box?

Yes as long as you install MS-DOS beforehand there's no reason it shouldn't work, dunno if you'd need special drivers for a mouse, VB probably can emulate a serial mouse though
