Suppose you want to get a Sound Blaster for your old PC. Naturally, to ensure the greatest compatibility you will want to go with Creative Labs products. In my opinion, any Sound Blaster after the AWE32, in 4000+ series, Vibra, or PCI is crap. (Even the AWE32 is hardly worth the bother.) I wouldn't trust any OEM or PnP models either. So, you need to get one or more of the following:
Sound Blaster 1.0-2.1
Sound Blaster Pro 1.0
Sound Blaster Pro 2.0
Sound Blaster 16
Sound Blaster AWE32

Even among these humble cards, there are often many variations, which are displayed by model number. Can anyone direct me to a list that focuses on the earlier, good Sound Blaster numbers that delineate the features of each board. If not, someone should create such a list.

The list should start at the CL-1300, the Game Blaster, and proceed to the CL-3980, the AWE32 PnP.

I've got an AWE64 Gold but have never really used it. My understanding is that it's similar to the AWE32 except that you can't put standard RAM sticks in it to increase its capacity.

I had a SB 16 (a few in fact!) then AWE 64 then SB Live Value and now SB Audigy 2ZS. Creative do a good sales job 😉

I used my AWE64 in DOS and it worked great! Results can very greatly by the revision of card and the drivers used. Some later DOS cards required drivers just to initialise the card whereas earlier ones didn't. Here's a good starter for a model list:
