Hello.

Which exact 3dfx driver did you install on the emulated computer? If it is the latest one from the Voodoo2, it requires DX7 to be installed.

That driver also requires DX7 installed as minimum to get DirectX applications working. Otherwise, I suggest replacing it with an older one that doesn't require it, and these can be found here.

No, it was an assumption because you didn't initially specify which 3dfx card was being emulated.

No worries. 😉

To make life easier with the current drivers, the same archived site has several versions of DirectX available.

As for replacing the drivers, do the following:

  1. Uninstall the 3dfx Tools in Add/Remove Programs.
  2. Go to Device Manager and remove the Voodoo3 there.
  3. Restart the emulated computer.
  4. The Voodoo3 will get detected once again, cancel the Found New Hardware Wizard dialog when it appears.
  5. Run the installer that comes with the older driver.

hey how do I put directx 6 from the link to the running win 98?, because when I downloaded it, it gave me a zip, do I have to extract it?

Extract the contents from the zip file, create an ISO image from the extracted files and from there you can mount it in PCem.

how do I do it? do I need imgburn?

Yes, ImgBurn or a similar program is enough for creating a simple ISO image.

Yes, ImgBurn or a similar program is enough for creating a simple ISO image.

is it required for it to be a bootable image?

Yes, but the format should be ISO.

The driver doesn't come bundled with the DirectX redistributable, but that should already be installed on the emulated computer. Besides, the last one that doesn't require DX7 is dated 21 Oct 1999.

Don't make things so hard for yourself. If you read the readme of the driver you downloaded from archive.org, it says the version is 1.07.00, and it needs DX7.

Simply download DX7.0 or DX7.0a, put it in an ISO file, open it in PCem and install it.

No need to mess around with older drivers, specially a super old one like 1.00.

EDIT:

These drivers do not come with DX included. That text simply means which version of DX is required.

You haven't mentioned which exact 98 you're using. If it's 98 SE, it already comes with DX6.1a.

None of them come with the redistributable, just only the driver.

If it is the Windows 98 SE, it will come with DX6 installed already.

Indeed, this is the first thing that I said to the OP regarding the drivers he originally installed. That should be easily understandable to everyone.
