Pretty much this, was there any progress with the idea of creating a Win G wrapper for games that supports it and still runs on modern PC's? HOMM has its own but it is limited only to HOMM itself.
Is there any way to get it one working for Win G games in general like Shadow of the Horned Rat and so on?

Hi, it's possible to install the WinG SDK on later versions of Windows, too.
Any 32-Bit version of Windows should be okay. I've been using it on Windows XP, for example.

Ok, more technical explanation.
Much of the functionality of WinG was being absorbed by the Windows DIB engine.
Windows 98FE was the last one to "support" WinG in the common sense.
However, WinG applications continue to work if those two DLLs are around.

Edit: Dithering might be a problem, though.
It nolonger seems to work properly on newer platforms.
Maybe related to video drivers or colour depth.

making directx or vulkan/gl emulate it wouldn't be a bad idea
The original WinG Patches for HOMM 1 and 2 by verok did something closer to that.

The thing is that even 3d games used winG like Su-27 Flanker W95 port
