I'm having problems running and installing DOS games using VDMSound. I've got Version 2.0.4 plus the latest update plus Launchpad. I've tried to install 7th Guest and Monkey Island 1 and I keep getting the same message:
"Could not commit to disk all the changes made to
(e.g. E:\Monkey1\Monkey\1.vlp):
Access is denied (0X80070005)."
Could the fact that I'm not the Administrator have anything to do with this?
I've not used VDMSound before so I'm a bit in the dark about this. I couldn't find anything to help in the other threads.
I've tried to give all the necessary info (system specs attached- or at least I hope they are) and I hope someone out there can help me 'cos I'd really like to be able to play my old games again - I never had all this trouble with Win98.
Thanks

Linda

It's possible that the error is being displayed because you do not have enough access to the file. Even being the administrator does not mean that you will have full access to the file. Depending on what rights are set on the file will determine what access you will have to that file. The best way to fix the problem would be to gain administrator priveleges. Check your permissions on the file. If you are unable to change permissions, then you must set ownership on the file to yourself or to the administrators group and then apply specifc rights to whichever users need to access the file....or more easily simply set FULL access to the "Authenticated Users" Group.

Sorry if the above is too complicated but NT ACL's are kinda of complicated....

Is E: your CD drive or a hard drive? Looks to me you are trying to install to your CD instead of to disk.

Yes, it’s my fault.

Actually this is EXACTLY what you get when you try to use the GUI launcher directly on a write-protected device.

You can:
1)Use the non-GUI part of VDMSound. Proabably not a good idea if you don't understand how it works.
2)Create a batch file that points to the CD files and run VDMSound on it.

For game executables that are on a CD-ROM (or other place where you cannot write), create a batch file with Notepad or similar text editor. You type in the letter of the device (my CD-ROM is H: ), then type the name of the executable or batch file.

Like this:
H:
GAME.EXE

You then save that file to someplace easy to remember and change the last 3 characters of the file from .TXT to .BAT, you then run VDMSound on your new batch file.

E:\ is write-protected (CD-ROM?) or the .vlp was created by another user and you don't have access to it, etc.

In LaunchPad uncheck the "Remember my settings" checkbox and tick the "Save shortcut to desktop" instead, then use the shortcut created on the desktop.
