I am a newbie here and have found a lot of very useful tips to run Realms. However I am unable to do so because when I begin to install using VDSM, open the launchpad and begin to make the adjustments read in previous topics. i.e. enable low-level cd-rom support. I keep getting this error message:

Could not commit to disk all the changes made to
E:\INSTALL.vlp:
Acces is denied. (0x80070005)

Please help!

System in XP home Edition

Thank you!!!

well you're e:\ is probably your cdrom drive.
which is (offcourse) write protected (see the rom part in cdrom)
To deal with this. Create a .bat file on your C:\ drive which has as only line:

e:\install

and set the properties you want to set on that .bat file

Water flows down the stream
How to ask questions the smart way!

Yes it is correct that my E drive is the cdrom. D drive is the dvd. I hate to write this down for the world to see how inept I am at computers in general, but I understand the instructions that you gave me but do not know exactly how to create a .bat file on the C drive, or how set properties either. 😢 Also, the other problem I was having when trying to run Realms was that the movie sequences at the beginning would not run at all, the cdrom would not start and the screen would freeze up and I would have to esc out of everything. Is this releated?? 😢

Thanks!!

Hi,

A bat file can be created in many ways. Here is one:

Click on Start -> Click Run -> Type 'command' without the quotes and then press enter.

You should be in the Documents and Settings dir in your user name dir.

I.E.: C:\DOCUME~1\YOURUSERNAME

Type 'CD Desktop' without the quotes and press enter. If your language of XP is other than English then the name desktop should be replaced with the translation in your language.

Type 'Edit game.bat' and press enter. You should be in an editor of some sort. Type the full drive and path to the file. In example 'E:\INSTALL.EXE' without the quotes. Click on File and then on Save. Then click on file and then on Exit or Quit. Type 'Exit' without the quotes and then press enter.

You should be back in XP with the icon 'game.bat on your desktop. Right click it and left click on 'Run with VDMS'. Make the correct settings and now you should be able to run.

Hope this helps. If not, post here.

Marco.

I am up and running now!!!!!!!! Thanks very much for your help. I just have another question. There is a health cheat file and and an ammo file that requires an uge game editor(the health one doesn't). here is the location as to where I found it:

http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Station/9621/rdload.htm

Again, dealing with a uge editor and the other files that have to be place a certain area are unfamiliar to me. Any help that you could give would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again as I am now able to play the game!

I am having this same problem with Dark Forces. I tried the making the bat file the way you suggested, but after running it with VDMS, at the exit part I end up with a screen that says "Inactive VDMS Launchpad" and I can do nothing.

Please help!

Thanks!
