I have to say that “If you want a good DOS computer that can run at 386 and 486 speeds and maybe even 286 speeds” this is the CPU you want. Allows you to play old DOS games and modern DOS games in good performance.
Also it’s NOT expensive to build.
If I could only have just one DOS computer this would definitely be on my list.

1st gen. Socket 7 , Pentium MMX.

No. Then you need a K6-III+
That have been proven to be the best platform for fine tuning speed to match 286, 386, 486 and Pentium speed's.

Well, I would use the AMD K6 for DOS/Win98 and not DOS/Win3x
The AGP Voodoo card works best with Win98.

Win9x is not good for 286/386/486/Pentium "simulated" speed for Dos games. And Voodoo is not the best in regards to Dos compatibility.

In the case of an full spektrum Dos era gaming rig this way, you need that K6-III+ and then one of the 3 following cards: CL-5446, S3-Virge325 or S3-Trio64v+. Then have MS Dos 6.22 and that setmui (or what it is called) CPU throtteling software.

K6-III+ and Win9x plus Voodoo is a perfect solution for late era Dos games and early era Win9x games instead.

Late era Win9x gaming, then K6-III is simply too weak. In that case you need something beefier.

I'm glad when people are happy with their project, but...

Either a K6-x+ or a PMMX would be great in this same build. I tried a P54 Pentium some time ago and found it lacks flexibility in comparison. Between changing clocks, changing TR parameters, and manipulating board cache, the performance between L1 cache enabled and disabled had a wide gap between two relatively narrow performance bands. The P55 core didn't have a gap in this region -- it scaled smoothly between 386DX-25 territory and full performance.

True... The P55 scales perfect within what it can do. However K6-III+ gives wider performance spectrum. It is like the P55 and then some more, when running full speed. Basically both can do, if you wish to go pre-pentium and Pentium. However for high res Pentium era Dos gaming. Well... Then the K6-III+ is a better choice. In other words, high performance Dos, then the K6-III+ beats the Pentum.

Oh, I agree. I've played around with an Ezra based solution for an even wider performance envelope. Ultimately, though, I really like running the few highly demanding DOS titles on a top end 98 machine. Bonus points if it can be downclocked for the few clock sensitive Windows titles. A number of solutions exist for doing this.

Okay, I want a really fast Win3x and Win95 build so I think I will add a CF card in the front of case
And use the CF cards to load multiple operating systems.
All I will have to do is swap out CF cards to archive this.

Same here, with DOS/Win31 on one CF (or SD/MMC with an adapter) and Win98SE on another. 👍

Guys,
I am going to reinstall this computer.
NOT sure if I should go with DOS/Win3.11 or DOS/Win95 ?….

What do you recommend ?

iOS. Obviously.

A k6-3+ is indeed quite tune able. Install 9x and fire up central tweaking unit. You can enable/disable l1 and l2, turn on or off write allocate and even set it as slow as 2x? Multiplier

Guys, if you haven’t tried DOS/Win3x on a 1st gen. Pentium computer you need to.
This is the way Win3x was suppose to run. It performs so quick and responsive on a 1st gen. Pentium.
And DOS games play great without stutter or hesitation.
Win3x Networking is much quicker too.

DOS and Win3x allow the user to tamper with the OS in ways that can brick a device, that is terrible OS design. iOS knows you for the total moron you are and sets it all up in a foolproof way. iOS is the way all computers was suppose to run.

You really mean first generation Pentium? The P5 60/66 Mhz was a damp squib. Overly expensive boards, ran hot the likes of which were not seen in hardwareland, and overall performance never justified its ludicrous price tag compared to the well established 486DX.

Prob means socket 5/7

The socket 4 pentium performance per clock was basically the same as the socket 5 variants wasn’t it?

iOS is precisely terrible because it treats the user like a moron and won't let them modify or touch anything and therefore learn. I hate that kind of walled garden philosophy when it comes to computers.

If I feel like mucking about with backend stuff that might ruin my OS install then that's my choice.

Pentium 60/66 CPUs were aimed at server and workstations. Consumer software didn't take advantage of the features it had at the time such as dual-pipelining and very strong FPU performance (aside from the FDIV bug which affected early Pentium CPUs) for the exact reason that you said regarding prices.

I also think this is what the OP meant, not these pre-P54C Pentium CPUs that flupke11 mentioned.

Should be. The "Batman's Revenge" motherboard came in Socket 4 and Socket 5 variants.

I have a Packard Bell Socket 4 system on the way. Not sure why I have been wanting a Socket 4 system, but I finally gave in an bought one... In quite poor shape from the pictures. Mysteries (sound card) lie within.. heh.
