I have a gateway 2000 with pentium overdrive 83 and 32 mb of ram

What’s the fastest video card I can get for it? 😀

I’m wanting to max out all the system specs. 32 mb seems to be the max. I could put a faster mhz processor in it with a interposer but I’m thinking the POD might be a good bet as is though? I have a amd 586 133? But would need to get a interposer (no biggie, I made one 🤣) Re: Socket 3 Tweaker

Anyway, the graphics card, I have no idea what to look for. I saw a few benchmark comparisons and searched some of the top performers but they are 300$ on ebay which is nuts 🤣.

Any practical suggestions or am I gonna be stuck paying that much if I want a record performer?

The best ISA Video card for a 486 is a VLB or PCI card

I’ve no doubt but this system doesn’t have those busses 🙁

What’s the onboard chip?

It wasn’t unheard of for the onboard video and ide to be a local bus.

Sometimes an ISA card outruns vlb but it depends on the chip.

If you don’t have PCI or VLB then your best bet is sticking with the onboard Cirrus Logic CL-GD5428. I’d bet it’s on a local bus which will make it faster than anything ISA.

I’m having problems with it. It is crashing when I try to open cpuz that’s as far as I have gotten

I have some more video ram I can put in it. Would that be why it it is crashing though? Seems unlikely?

Is cpu-z the only time it crashes? I’d run a whole bunch of other tests first. Maybe you just hit a rare incompatibility or there’s another issue.

I haven’t really got it running yet. I booted ME on it from my xt-ide in a attempt to copy files to the scsi to start a win 95 install but haven’t had more time to mess with it. But it is glitching out when I launch cpu z it shows graphics glitches and freezes.

If you edit CPUZ.ini and change all the xxx=1 to xxx=0 does CPUZ then start OK, if so then restore each to =1 'till you find the one that triggers the lockup.

Is it just CPUZ that causes lockups? Does my SIV utility? If SIV also has issues from a command window do SIV32L -DBGINI and post the generated SIV_DBGOUT.log to my SIV thread.

hello Sphere 478,
You use cpuz vintage edition, right ?
can you please edit cpuz.ini and set :

Sensor=0

and try again ?
Thanks

But I won’t be able to try these out for a while. Will have to get to it when I am back in front of it

Looking at the mobo, there are bus buffers at the Cirrus and this strongly suggests it is VLB connected so as said previously, it will be far better than anything ISA for that machine.

Out of curiosity what is the maximum supported amount of video memory that I can install in the expansion sockets for the onboard

Looks like you can get 512KB more for 1MB total.

I don't think I was using vintage edition, I'll have to go back and check

My system is running XP
