Usb 2.0 cards bog down the cpu even if not being used.

You can see this in 3d mark scores.

As much as 1/3 less with a usb 2.0 card installed.

It is best to use a hub off the onboard usb.

This will also affect your hard drive speed.

Using onboard usb and offboard hard drive controller is the best config.

Try sata or scsi.

As for memory, it seems most of my ali mobos have better memory performace but I do have really nice memory speed from my freeway mobos. Which are mvp3 so it seems to be the trend not the rule. It is easier to get more memory configurations working on ali though including high capacity up to 1.5gb

In the k6 aiming for the stars thread someone transplanted the timings from the p5a into the 5ax and got p5a like performance.

I think something similar can happen with mvp3 which outlines that we should be playing with these timings more. But doing so requires bios editing.

Are you saying here that the best Ali based mobo is Asus P5A?

Also is it me or it is like that, that VIA handling AGP better than ALI?
It is off topic here, but I use voodoo3 2000, which known one of the best in compatibility with SS7 systems, but I noticed sluggish things when moving windows on ALI mobo (ga-5ax), when it's smoother on DFI and SOYO mvp3 mobos. I know it is silly to compare mobos based on windows interface, but still wondering

I’m not making a claim but the p5a 1.04 is a pretty good performing mobo. It has been used in a few record runs.

Agp is pretty hit and miss on ss7

I’ve had good luck with my freeway mobos and agp though

I guess I'll stick with Sisoft Sandra since it's freely and easily available (it's in the Windows 98 benchmark pack you can get from Phil's website). In this case we can't do a direct comparison since we're using different benchmarking programs. The Ali chipset is superior to the MVP3, though the memory bandwidth can be improved on the MVP3 with the better motherboards having more memory options such as bank interleaving and such. This is the best memory bandwidth I've been able to achieve with my Epox MVP3G-M; this is at 124 MHz FSB, all CMOS memory settings maxed out. For benchmarking with 3D 2000 I get higher scores with 112 MHz FSB since the 1024k motherboard cache can be enabled at that speed, but 124 gives it the best memory scores.

I think this is why the Ali Aladdin has superior memory performance to theMVP3:

"One of the most important features the Aladdin V chipset boasts is the internal L2 cache the chipset features, more specifically the M1541 chip has an integrated 16K x 10-bit Tag RAM as well as 16K x 2 L2 cache SRAM, both of which decrease cost and increase performance somewhat. The most important reason for including the Tag RAM on chip is to make using the 100MHz bus speed possible. The 100MHz Bus Frequency puts a heavy strain on the L2 cache, and tests have shown that without fast L2 cache & a capable Tag RAM chip (6ns or faster) the 100MHz bus speed has the potential to become quite erratic. By placing the Tag RAM on the chipset ALi eliminates the possibility of the L2 cache or chipset as being the limiting factor in making use of the 100MHz bus speed."

Very nice results!!! I refuse to overclock still. I had way too many problems with peripherals... Memory performance is great! but IDE hard drives were ruined, loosing partitions, damaging files.... I did 110 and 115..... Again, maybe this is specific this example of the board GA-5AX rev 4.1 giving me that problems. But I kinda got same results with MVP3 SOYO 5EMA+ when overclocked. Weird artefacts on the screen... So Idk.
I want to enjoy "factory" settings 100x6 for now.
Thanks for your picture! I still want to find best mobo for my rig. So far for now it is GA-5AX, except weird IDE controller (which replaced with faster PCI one), no sensors and extra fan headers.

K6-3+ at 600mhz is a tried and tru config. May as well be the unofficial k6 that amd never released 🤣. I have pondered ordering copper cnc heat spreaders that say 600mhz and using liquid metal for the 2+ To 3+ mod.

Many ss7 mobos don’t work that great with overclocked fsbs.

It seems every time I have tried to find a faster config on any of my setups I always end up back at 100mhz fsb.

I probably need to invest in new caps.

I’d like to get ahold of a sis 540 with agp and give 133 a try. But I can’t find one.

I should order two labratory psus and try the overclocks again using the interposer I made to feed vcc2 and vcc3 but I don’t wanna pull the vcc3 vrm out of my boards 🤣

Yes. I just have floppy card/reader combo and front usb on the case. I also ordered powered internal hub, which I stick inside the computer. I can connect those two usb from hub to onboard USB 1.1 and keep my card reader and two front usb connectors as "legacy from the future" option 😀

Do that. IMO USB 2.0 add on cards should literally never be used. Any system new enough to properly utilize USB 2 will have it integrated on the motherboard.
