Hi All,

Built myself a K-3iii/400 setup a few months ago on a DFI P5V3+ v2 originally to mess with my daughters head by giving her a Dos prompt but which got out of hand and morphed into 384MB Sd100, Soundblaster 16 and a choice of graphics cards ranging from a Trident through Matrox to an Nvidia Mx something or other. Working floppy drive and CDRW have also landed and i found a new Ch Products Mach 3 joystick to give me some control in XWing.

I've been looking at IDE DOM units on Ebay and other places as they look nice and tidy but i can't seem to find any usage detail on retro pc builds. Does anyone have experience?

Usage will be Dos 6 and OS/2

I have a couple and use them on my U5S (486SX) 33 (256MB) and P3-500 (4GB) DOS builds.

So far they are fast, and trouble free, although I haven't exactly been torturing them with writes.

Good to know, thanks for getting back so quickly. Just put an order in for a Hyperdisk 8GB, specs states 150MB/s so we'll see how it goes.

A lot of them come without the power cable, which they need.

Luckily the one I ordered comes with the molex adapter - majority of the Ebay jobs seem to ship sans power cable.

I like IDE DOMs because they make for a very clean looking build but there are a couple things to remember:

  • They have clasps that attach very firmly and can crack the plastic guard rails around the IDE headers if you are not careful
  • If you have a Pentium or newer system and want to do speeds faster than ATA-33, you need to either ground pin 34 or attach with an 80 connector cable
  • If you are doing the faster speeds, the larger capacity DOMs with multiple flash chips often seem to have higher max throughput capacities
  • The guts are usually simiar to an industrial CF, but like industrial CFs, there's a lot of different guts that can go in there. Here's photos of 3 recent ebay purchases:

Another good call above.
Those plastic clips! I chopped mine off with a pair of side cutters. It locks into the base of the IDE connector and wont let go at all.

Nice link there, I didnt realise it runs as ATA-33. But I use mine with NT4 so I guess I never would notice on a file server that just has the OS on it.

Out of all the different controllers pictured, in theory, the EDC 4000 / Innodisk looks the most interesting with the wide range of supported IDE modes and support for wear leveling. I'll test them out some time next week.

They can work, but fastest would be m.2 sata on a pci sata card.

There is a all in one card for sale from rabit computing if I am remembering the company name correctly.

Personally, I use promise sata II tx4 card with a 2.5” to m.2 adapter
