Celeron 600 Mhz to slow for Wing CommanderI?

Hi folks,

recently I was lucky to get my moms old PC. Its an intel celeron with 600 Mhz and 384 MB of RAM. I inserted my SCC1 (+MT32) and a SB16 PlugnPlay. Ah yes, and I connected a CH Flightstick to the SB16.
I have installed DosBox 0.7.2 and gave it a try with one of my favorites from the good old times, WING COMMANDER I.
But unfortunately the game turned out to be nearly unplayable when more than three ships are being around.
Manually changing the cyclerate didnt help. And when I boot straight into real MS DOS 6.2 the game is way to fast and I am shot down within seconds 😀
MOSLO didnt help in real DOS either. The gameplay is neither to fast or to slow.

I did a clean WIN98 SE install at first when I got the PC. There are no other apps installed but SCUMMVM. Is there a way to get more performance out of my Windows or DosBox, or do I have to go for a faster machine?

Thanks
joe

cycles=max is the worst possible choice for WC. 5000 cycles is good though. Core=dynamic is very yes.

Thanks wd and leileilol,

at first I tried core=dynamic and cycles=max.
That gave me a way better result, but sometimes the midi-music played a little slow.
I than tried cycles=5000 and the music played without delays.

Thanks again to both of you.

You can mix things in more ways, like cycles=max 50% (see the readme).
Nice you found something that works for you.

nah, cycles=max on dynamic core can run terminal velocity playably on a 400mhz, so i bet it'll just overspeed wing commander

Bah, wingcommander can't be too fast anyways, good skills needed 😉

I am already improving my rusted skills 😀

Ah this feels so good, bringing back those memories. I already tried WC2. This is really great!

By the way you should use loadfix before starting wc1/wc2, as they got some
problems with too much memory available (crashes in later levels).

Yesterday I did encounter a crash during the the 5th mission (or so) of WC2 under pure DOS. I will try loadfix.

Thanks wd

Hi again,

so, I reached Wing Commander II and unfortunately it crashes at the third or fourth mission as I mentioned earlier.
I can leave for the flight and engage the autopilot for two times and then the game hangs no matter what I do.

That error is reproducable at exactely the same place in the game under pure DOS and DOS Box for Macintosh. Right now I only try it with DOS Box.
I already placed the loadfix command at the end of the config-file like this:
LOADFIX C:\wing2\wc2.exe

But the only message I get when starting the game is this here:
Failed to load OriginFX-drivers64 kb freed.

Any ideas?

This wc2-bug should be solveable with loadfix as well, try "loadfix -32"
or a lower number (wc2 needs much free conventional memory, but not
too much...)
If it still doesn't work, try "loadfix -f" or a combination (first loadfix -f,
then loadfix -32 or something similar).

Nagra, if you are using Win98, I don't get why you would need DOSBox, except for games that run too fast on your system.

Can't most DOS games be run in your PC by restarting in DOS mode?

Which is exactly the problem with a lot of Origin games: they run too fast.

@Neville:
Got to change my signature. I am playing on my mac with dosbox.

@wd:
Thanks! I think I am very close now. Here is what I found out:

loadfix -f C:\wing2\wc2.exe
produces a crash of the games at the same place but now with an error message (see attachment).

loadfix -32 C:\wing2\wc2.exe
YES!!! I was instantly able to pass the point of which the game crashed every time before. Everything seemed normal.

Unfortunately I have no speech now... SPEECH ENABLED no longer appears when starting the game with loadfix -32.

I already tried lower numbers, but so far no speech, aargh 😀

Hm not sure if the speech was connected to ems or conventional memory.
Be sure you have ems=true in your dosbox.conf.
Besides that, check the wc2 setup, not sure if you can switch something
for ems usage.

If it's about conventional memory, try loadfix -4 or even lower.

Still no change here.

With loadfix -"x" I can get beyond the point of where it crashed before, but I don´t have speech during the entire game. I tried it with lots of loadfix-combinations - no change of that.

EMS is set to true, as it was all the time before.
When starting without loadfix I do get speech, but the game will crash at the specific point.

There are no options in the wc2-Installer in terms of ems or so.

Hm don't know, maybe try the loadfix -f loadfix -16 (or another number)
combination again.
If you got past that first crash, save, then restart wc2 without loadfix so
sound works, does it crash again?
