Could someone with a Rendition board and a copy of Indy Car Racing 2/Cart Racing 2 try replacing the effecs.dat file in the game's effects folder with the attched one and see if smoke and dust effects work?

Thanks!

[EDIT] Also is the pre-existing file 36 KB or 50 KB?

All texturing and fogging issues with ICR2 should be fixed. The upscaled mirrors may have issues. No other games have been properly tested.

Once I fix the random glitch with the mirrors, this game should be 100%.

Up next CPU load saturation stability fixes.

Hi Sharangad,

Thanks for sharing the updated build in response to the Youtube comment I left. I spend some time this afternoon installing and getting it working. I was able to get it playable but having a problem with the menus/cockpit being scrambled. I believe this might be because I am on a 21:9 monitor? I tried various configuration settings, including trying to force it to run at 16:9 but the output was either squashed or had corruption like this.

image.png

Menus:
image.png

Is the only option right now for fullscreen or is there a windowed mode as well? I will keep testing with it. The framerate was nice and stable when it was working!

EDIT: I have figured out the issue, I had only installed the "Rendition Patch" on a DOS version of ICR2, however there are additional changes in a full Rendition version. I have reinstalled the game from the CD with the rendition version and the menus/cockpit appear normal now!

You'll have to swap out the 50 kb effects.dat file for the 36 lb version from the dos version in the effects folder for smoke and dust effects.

The Verité microcode file spd3d.uc is responsible for this. I guess rready /dosbox-rendition is coded for the uc file from the full game.

Hi Sharangad,

The issue I was having was caused by using the v2 "SPD3D.UC" found on a few different sites including racesimcentral: https://racesimcentral.net/indycar-racing-ii/?sim=downloads

I've attached that version of the file (71kb):

Filename
V2SPD3D.zip

Reverting to the 56kb version of the "SPD3D.UC" packaged with ICR2 Rendition resolves the menus/corrupted cockpit. I am unsure what the "V2 Update" file was meant to do, so perhaps it is not necessary.

I was able to play with the RReady Wrapper and ICR2 for a few hours, and recorded a short video of part of a race I was having:
https://youtu.be/ApCxuHBKY_8

Overall the game plays fairly well with the standard carset and tracks, however I did notice some issues. I've written them below in no particular order. Some of these issues might not necessarily be a part of the wrapper, but perhaps differences in this version of Indycar Racing II, however I will note them nontheless.

I have been playing with the following parameters:
set SPEEDY3D_DMA=1
set SPEEDY3D_MEMSIZE=8 (I have tried this at higher numbers too, im not sure if they would do anything)?

  • When running 32 cars (with 32 cars visible front and back) at the "New" Michigan track, the graphics will sometimes corrupt and artifact when many cars are in view and appear to 'freeze'. It also happens frequently when going into replay mode near the start of a race. The sound/audio is still playing in the background, and you can still control the game. Sometimes the display will return to normal, sometimes it will crash.
  • The helmets of the other cars randomly change color
  • There are some single pixel transparent lines of the cockpit
  • Some keyboard controls no longer function as expected. The 'W' key should show or disable the transparent 'windscreen', but it does nothing. The "F10" key should show an external view of the car when driving but does not function. The '+' and '-' keys should increase or decrease the front rollbar (indicated by the small "f" bar on the top right of the dashboard). Both of these keys do not function, however by holding alt and the '+' key it is able to make the bar go up, but alt and "-" does not decrease the bar. The same is true for the rear anti rollbar, the bracket keys typically control this, but they only function when also holding 'alt'.
  • Most addon tracks/carsets do not work and either show "Insuficient memory" for tracks, or "Not a Valid Carset" for carsets. I was able to get a few more basic carsets to load (potentially ones with standard sized texture files). For these addon carsets which feature a more complex 3d shape, the FPS in the game is very low when running with them (10 - 15fps). I have attached one example of these kinds of carsets here in case you would like to experiment with it.

I will keep experimenting with this version of the game. It is very very neat to see it at a higher resolution after playing with it at 640x480 for so many years. Thank you again!!

This is a version of the Verité microcode for running ICR2 on a V2000 board. The game by default in pure DOS mode will not run on a V2000.

This tells the static linked Speedy3D libraries built into the game how much RAM to use. The readme says this can be increased to 4MB from 2MB (I wasn't even aware there were 2 MB boards). But it might do nothing beyond 4MB.

This is the random instability that I might've mentioned. A spike in the CPU use causes this. It usually crashes. It will be fixed, just as soon I figure out how.

I know what causes this and I'll try and fix it. It's not a priority at the moment.

The keyboard shortcuts in the Rendition version use [ALT]. For instance [ALT+M] toggles mirror detail. In your video you're running at medium (low really). [ALT+W] Cosmetic weather, [ALT+R}] Show framerate, [ALT+X] high framerate demo mode. There should be a readme on the CD for the Rendition version with a full list.

This might be because memory management for larger textures sizes is messed up. How do you load a carset? If I can load your carset maybe I can fix it.

I am familiar with the visual of how the helmets look when turning, however the colors of the helmets themselves change (a driver's might be red in one view, and suddenly it is green in another) and are sometimes the wrong color or grey. The helmets themselves use a different texture format than the regular cars do, which might be a reason why. When looking at screenshots/videos from racesimcentral's testing I can see that that cars seem to have the correct helmet colors, but for the default carset using the wrapper the helmets always appear as grey.

The new keyboard commands specific to the Rendition version work, the keyboard commands I am talking about (such as 'F10' for external driving view) are commands from the original game. Some commands work fine, such as "D" to change the dashboard display. But others don't work.

Carsets can be loaded by extracting the zipped folder in the "Cars" directory. And within the main menu of the game with in the 'Driver Info' page, you can change carsets using the 'carset' option. I have attached here an example of one which does not work at all.

I think the monochrome helmets can be fixed by renaming defaults.ini (or. cfg) to something else and letting the game recreate it.

You do need 95 cars in the cars folders as, well as 4bit.
