I have been playing late era xp 3d games, and I noticed the longer I play, the game will gradually have worse performance, usually in the form of draw distance. I ran hwinfo and it seems my 980ti is being thermal throttled, reaching 85c (throttle happens at 83c). the gpu fan is spinning up like it should, showing 1000rpm idle, and 2200rpm at max temps. is there any way to adjust the fan profile on winxp or bring the temps down in any other way? i think most of the software for this card is for later versions of windows.

my cpu is on an aio liquid cooler and never goes above 45c (30c at idle)
the system has 3 120mm case fans in addition to the cpu radiator fans

specs
Winxp sp3 integral
Gigabyte G1.Sniper z97
Intel i7 4790k 4.4ghz
16gb ddr3
evga 980ti reference
creative x-fi titanium

Try older versions of MSI Afterburner. You might be able to adjust the fan curve manually from there.

By the way, a GTX 980 Ti hitting thermal limits while running WinXP titles isn't exactly normal. Are you playing without V-Sync by any chance? That's a bad idea, since physics in many WinXP era games break above 60 FPS. Alternatively, the thermal paste on that GPU might need replacing.

You also have founders edition, those run a bit hotter. Replace thermal paste, use v-sync and set up fan profile in MSI afterburner.

Unfortunately GTX 580 is the last GPU supported by NiBiTor where you can set fan profile in BIOS.

V-Sync was the ticket, brought it down to ~70c

the paste is no more than a year old.
