They were cards that had SB, Windows Sound System and Covox Speech Thingie emulation support. They weren't entirely stable or built that well imho.

I used a Aztech Sound Galaxy Pro 16 from '94-'98 and from what I remember, it was both SBPro and SB16 compatible, but I could be wrong. It never gave me any problems and didn't require any nonsense such as TSRs or initialization software.
In fact, I still have it but I haven't gotten around to building a shitbo, er, dosbox yet to try it out.
