Hello, another forum I asked this on directed me here.

I recently found my old Mechwarrior 2 - 31st Century Combat (Ati 3D Rage Edition).

I'm using WIndows XP.

I've got Dosbox 0.72; I mounted it to the right folder, however, when I try to run the game, it says:

'This program cannot be run in DOS mode.'

Did I do something wrong?

Image of what I did and what it says:

What do you mean with 'is a Windows executable, obviously?'

I tried running it outside Dosbox before and it wouldn't work either, if that is what you mean.

I checked the folder and it's the only thing with a '.exe' in it, so I guessed it would be that to activate.

That you obviously tried to run a WINDOWS executable inside a DOS emulator.
If it doesn't run in windows complain to microsoft and not to us.

Whoa, calm down.

I found the game in the supported list, so I thought it would work for this too (like it worked on my other game of the same year)...

Nevermind then.. it never said it couldn't run .exe files in the FAQ or the wiki..

I'm sure Microsoft offers support for a 13/14 year old game...

there is a dos version or executable of mech warrior 2 as well.
So that is why it is in the compatibility list.

Aah....

Well erm... might as well ask it here..

Why can I start the game on my XP system, but when it opens it auto-crashes to my desktop? I checked the 'use W95 compability function' too.

Because Mechwarrior 2 was programed for Windows 9x, not Windows 2000+.

If you want to run Mechwarrior 2 for Windows on Windows 2000+ then you can do so (you'll need to download a fix for it) but it's not really recommended. Your far better off playing the DOS version

I tried googling for a fix, but can't find it (I haven't got the Dos version, sadly enough). Have you got any tips to find the fix?

I've only tested for the version of Mechwarrior 2 for Windows that I have. The methods I listed here do work for the versions that I list but not for other versions like the ATI Rage:

Mechwarrior 2 Titanium

Tested 9-5-2008

When installing game choose the hardware acceleration option.

Download Dgvoodoo v1.50Beta 2 and extract the files into the game directory.

Adjust the resolution in Dgvoodoo to what resolution you want to run the game in. Also in the game itself configure it to use 3dfx instead of Direct3D.

Download the Mechwarrior 2 XP patch Titanium beta 1 from here:
http://www.warp13.co.uk/mech2

Finally disable DEP for mercswin.exe to play the game.

Also download the "View Distance Modifier" from Mech2.org to increase the view distance.

Mechwarrior 2 Ghost Bears Legacy Titanium

Right-click on mercswin.exe and apply Windows 95 compatibility mode.

Finally disable DEP for mercswin.exe to play the game.

The special ATI Rage 3D version is not for dos, and it's also not Titanium, so DOSBox does not apply.
