VFD is a very important piece of software for DOSBox and floppy inage cataloging. However, it was made for Windows 2000/XP, and some people have had trouble getting it to work on Vista and 7. Using Windows 7 64 bit, here are the problems and what I had to do to get it working:

First, using the current version (build 06-02-2008) of VFD, I got the message "Virtual Floppy Drive does not work on Windows 95/98/ME" when you start up vfdwin.exe. Nothing in the Properties menu would fix this and the program would not start. However, the prior version (build 04-04-2005) does not display the message and will start. Get the prior version from here:

Second, the driver will not start, presumably as it is a 32-bit device driver. To get it to start, first download the 64-bit driver here:

http://chitchat.at.infoseek.co.jp/vmware/vfd- … 4-critical0.zip

and replace the existing vfd.sys with it.

If you try starting this driver, Windows 7 will complain that it requires a digitally signed driver and will not allow unsigned drivers to run. Restart your system, press F8 as Windows is starting, and select the option Disable Device Driver Signing, and the driver will finally start. You have to do this at every boot up unless you use a more permanent way to disable digitally signed drivers.

have you tried compatibility mode?

No, compatibility mode won't work. I've tried that in my Win7 x64 too.

I installed Windows 7 32-bit on another drive in my new computer.

I then downloaded the current version (build 06-02-2008) of VFD. No longer did I get the "Virtual Floppy Drive does not work on Windows 95/98/ME" message when I started up vfdwin.exe. The driver would not install unless I ran the program as an Administrator, after that it installed and started up normally.
