I've tried to install a Windows 95/98 compatible game on a Windows 7 pc using dosbox. I've followed all the instructions but when I type in the EXE. file it tells me that the program requires Microsoft Windows. I have tried mounting the file from both a folder and the CD-ROM but both neither seem to work.

That's because DOSBOX only emulates a DOS environment, not a Windows one. It is possible to install Windows inside DOSBOX but it takes some effort. You may be better off looking at a virtual machine like VMWare Workstation or Microsoft Virtual PC and installing windows 95 in that.

If you are squeamish, don't prod the beach rubble.

Or compatibility mode.

Doom isn't just a game, it's an apocalypse survival simulator.

I think we need to put something on the DosBox webpage stating that DosBox does NOT run windows games. 🤣

If that's really what it says (and it doesn't mention "DOS mode" at all), then the program can probably run under Windows 3.1.

I blame all the people who post videos of DosBox running Win95 on Youtube. 🤣
